Does ANYONE make a reliable pistol safe?!?!
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:43:01 PM »
I hope this is the right place to post this.

I've tried to surf all of my favorite gun forums as well as run a google search. My dad as well as I are looking for a reliable pistol safe that will simply keep the gun out of my nephews hands. I realize that they are not bombproof, but he / we only need to secure the weapon from the hands of my brothers children when they are visiting. He wants to mount it to the side of his headboard or possibly underneath the bed, so he can have access to his revolver should he need it for things that go bump in the night.

I've looked at Gunvault Biometrics, nonbio safes, as well as some others , Locksaf biometric safe, V-line and bioVAULT 2.0. I like the fact that with the biometric safes, all it takes is one finger in the dark... no fumbling with buttons that may lock up if u get too many wrong codes in the heat of a nervous frantic moment. I also like the security of a nonelctronic pushbutton safe as well. I use a biometric Pharmaceutical dispenser at my work which works great, although it likely costs $50k.

After some negative feedback about the Gunvault line of safes, I'm second guessing this company. The others don't seem as speedy or nice with the POP open door or lighted interior that Gunvault offers however. Money aside, doesn't anyone offer a reliable pistol safe that is compact and easy to use? I mean come on. ther's gota be others out there like me that want the same!?

Any help or guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
P.S. Michael Bane ROCKS as do his shows! I can barely wait to see my recorded episodes each week!

My co-worker, and fellow shooter, bought a Winchester ev600. It is well built, and large enough for a full-size pistol and mags, without having to angle it to get it in there. Little light comes on when opened, easily programmable, has a "lock out" feature if the code is entered incorrectly, (by little fingers), and made in the USA.  If I had kids in my house all the time, I would certainly have this one. It is well made.

the reviews are very positive at overstock.com

And good prices at Overstock too.  I'd never bought anything until just now...I got the EV 400 model to mount in the truck.

And...I saw that Overstock has links to the Wounded Warrior Project which means I will buy from them again! ! !

I have a GunVault and have no issues at all with it.  I've had it about a year and a half, on the first set of batteries and it opens in a second with the keypad.  The combo doesn't have to be difficult to slow down a kid, make it too complex and it will slow you down.

I don't have small kids around but state law requires that I keep my guns (all of them) secured with at least a trigger lock when I'm not home and this safe meets the minimum requirement set by the commies in Boston.

This is what I use:

They cost $60-$75 depending on where you get them. They are not the toughest thing in the world, and could probably be gotten into with a crow bar.... But like you I was just looking for something to keep my kids hands of the gun but still have it quickly accessable.... Hell, I dont even have mine bolted down. I have two of them and have been very happy with them and recommend them for what you are looking for. They have been 100% reliable for about a year now and I am in and out of them several times a day.

My next one will be a GunVault.  I have an off brand, Boyt "Secure Vault", I got a couple years ago at Gander Mt and the lock failed after about 6 months.  Now it doesn't lock at all.

My only complaint with my basic gunvault is changing batteries is a PITA.  Never an issue.

It keeps you legal and safe from little kids, but is not secure from theft.
"Why are you carrying a pistol?  Expecting trouble?"

"No Maam.  If I was expecting trouble, I'd have a rifle."
