Thanks Rob
I was thinking of this list more for my wife when we are at home and that bump in the night happens. Kind of like you showed on this years (season 3's) show where you ran up the stairs and yelled a "safe room word" to your wife.
I remember the show said to say your name and address and what your people were wearing, were you are in the house and that you are armed, I just wanted to check to see if there was anything else I didn't remember.
Thanks for the answer and keep up the great shows, I'm glad it's back to the BD style, I didn't care for the BDS shows.
Thanks Again!
David
Dear David:
I’m looking for the actual script I wrote for season 1. I’ve changed computers since then, but I’ll try to track it down in my archives.
Part of the idea behind the script was to ensure that even if you used an old cell phone without a SIMS card to call 911, you could still answer all the questions without the benefit of caller ID. In general, you need to be able to tell the operator:
Your name
Your address
That someone has/is trying to invade your home
Who is with you (if anyone)
That you are armed and in fear for your life
Where you are in the house
Although having a script to read your own address seems stupid, under the stress of a home invasion, the ability to remember and articulate seemingly simple things can fall apart. Also, remember to print the script in a large font that’s easy to read without glasses (if you wear them) or when you lose near-vision acuity under stress.
Stay on the phone and use it to your advantage. Although some people will argue that announcing the fact that you are armed to the intruder warns him and reduces your tactical advantage, from a practical and ethical standpoint, it may scare him off so you don’t have to shoot. That’s a good thing. If you are forced to defend your life, justifying your actions becomes easier when it becomes clear that you warned him that you were armed and he STILL came after you.
I hope this helps.
Stay safe,
Mike
