Rented an LCR at the range today
« on: February 08, 2010, 02:57:09 PM »
It's a nice looking gun, good fit and finish. This one had the Hogue grip, and I fired 50 rounds of Independence .38 special 130 gr FMJ (required to buy the ammo from the range). It's accurate, but even with .38 sp and a two handed grip I needed to adjust the pistol in my hand almost every round. My trigger finger was also pretty sore by the 15th round or so. The Hogue grip did tame any felt recoil in the hand, but with the adjustments needed and the sore finger I get the impression +P would be a handful.  I honestly cant see this little revolver going .357 . .327 is where I see this leading.

My recommendation for anyone thinking about an LCR is to try it first.  It's not for everyone.

Meanwhile, S&W will be around in the next few months with their lightweight pistol and I hope to be able to check it out.

Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.

Thanks for the review Fatman, my wife is thinking about the LCR. I have heard the same from others about the recoil and with her small hands another choice will be a better option. She wants a revolver and like's the snubbies.

The search continues.  ;D

Don't necessarily give up on the LCR yet. My wife and I bought matching LCRs with CT grips. I'm a good size guy, but my wife is very slim/tiny and has also had carpal tunnel surgery in the past. That said, she loves the trigger. It really does feel different than other snubbies (I also have a S&W snubbie which is good, but we like the LCR trigger better).

The easiest way to explain it is that your finger does not feel the weight until you are in the power zone of your finger strength (ie, pressure is light when your finger is extended and then builds as you pull). Being a range rental gun, you may have gotten a beat up example, dunno. Also, while I'd think the Hogues would be better, the CT grips on ours have never been an issue.

Anyway, we are both very satisfied with ours and I'd buy another one in a flash if something happened to one of ours.

You may also want to hang out to see how S&W does with their polymer snubbie, but I don't think it has hit the streets yet.

Regards,
- Ken

I heard the S&W is some sort of striker-type action (he's not exactly sure he understood what the rep said) from my indoor range owner. The trigger is supposed to be ultra smooth.

We'll see. If I still can't deal with the 'grip slip' issue, it's a moot point.  Maybe snubbies are not meant for me.   :-\
