Rumor of ammo shortage ?
« on: February 12, 2010, 04:39:47 PM »
Hello to all;

I stopped at a regional sports store today on my delivery run. I asked about some   00 buck shotgun shells and the clerk said to buy as much ammo now because he was told that around   August  of this year there will be another ammo shortage from the manufactures.

I don't know if he just wanted to increase his sales, But has anyone else heard anything on this?

I've not heard anything of the sort.  What part of the country are you in?  How can someone predict an ammo shortage six months out?  Hmm...

No, I haven't heard that, but that might be because I reload.  I am also a firm believer in that saying "caveat emptor"--"buyer beware"...that goes both for tangible items somebody is trying to sell me and whatever BS someone is spouting at me.  I am a discriminating "buyer" in that respect.   ;)

Sounds like vicious rumor to drive prices up (again).. :-\

Hello,

My route takes me into the "lower tier" of New York. The store was in the Binghamton area and the clerk just made the remark that "the Manunfactures" are telling the stores of a shortage in/@ August.  I was buying   00 buck  shells and I made a comment that I will never be low on ammo again, That is when the clerk made his comment.  His store was loaded with ammo on Wednesday and today..... I was checking with all of you out there that may have better intel on what is going on.

Just got home from the range.  Long drive, about five minutes... ;D

The only shortage up here is I didn't bring enough with me, after a few hundred rounds, I ran out and was too lazy to go home and get some more out of the closet!

Had the range to myself again, last one out turns out the lights and locks the gate........ ;)

Sounds like you ran into a knucklehead sales person. Ammo is coming back slowly,  although I have to admit I reload and haven't bought any ammo in about 9 months.

Plenty of ammo at the recent shows, and online.

Prices at the shows, and local retailers still stink, but online is reasonable.

Some dealers bought and stockpiled ammo back when it was ridiculous, now they are trying to recoup their investment. While other dealers, have somewhat reasonable prices, and are more interested in sales and moving of the product.

Example. Wolf AK 7.62x39 20 rd box at the Palm Beach show: $4.99 to $11.49 per box.

Online: $3.49 per 20 same ammo.

Bulk deals 200-400-500-1000 rd "deals" were OK, but not stellar, depending on caliber. Plenty of reloading supplies, including primers, but they were still twice as much per 1000, than they used to be. :-\

From what I am hearing it is either an ignorant salesman that wants to sound "in the know and impress you," someone so out of the loop they don't know what is happening and looking at past trends, or someone that heard from one supplier that they are in for a cut back for one reason or other.

A prime example of something that causes issues up here is Black Hills Ammunition.  Their military contracts are driving them.  They work around the clock and expand just to keep up.  They deplete all supplies to meet the contracts.  If all you do is listen to Black Hills you will wring your hands in despair, because there will never be ammo for any of us.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
