Finally got around to buying an XDM in 9mm put 20 rounds through it shoots and feels great in the hand.
BUT i noticed that the striker retainer pin (located behind loaded chamber indicator on top of slide) backed out quite a bit. if i didnt notice I could only imagine a bang bang click senario.
Also I own alot of tools and a 3/32 punch required to remove the backstrap is not one of them. I assumed it had a more user friendly method.
Any way my first springfield armory gun is heading right back to them. So far not impressed.
(my glocks work great)
I hear they have great customer service, though

Good to know about their customer service. Know what I hear about Glock's customer service? Nothing. No one I know has ever needed it. ;D Thing is, that's not just a gratuitous slam, or a kool-aid hiccup either. When was the last time you heard, either at the range or on a board, what a great (or bad) CS experience someone had with Glock? Kel-tec is famous for great CS, Smith and Ruger are supposed to be good as well, and H@K supposedley suck. Glock? I've never heard a good or bad thing about it. To me, that's the best thing that can be said.

Give their customer service a chance.  May end well, usually does.

The XD has a few quirks like this, but overall it is not a bad gun.

Your immediate denial that you are a kool-aid drinker proves that you are a Glock kool-aid drinker.   :)

My brother is a firearms instructer with the Illinois State Police.  I'll ask him what Glock's customer service was like when their Glocks were blowing up because they had lights mounted.

I know they were issued Sigs for a while, but now they are back to Glocks again.

Glock customer service is very good.  My G 19 has been back twice, once I gummed it up with some Brand X super lube and once  with a broken part.  Turn a round was 14 days for the first, 2 days for the second ( they replaced the springs as well). I must have close to 30K rounds through it now.

See my M& P post today.

We say Keltec has great CS because they get so much practice.

I've heard Taurus' customer service is terrible.

Personally, the only gun I had to send in was a Beretta.  Pulling the trigger didn't release the firing pin.  They took care of the problem, but didn't reimburse me for my shipping costs to get the brand new gun fixed.

Today's name-brand guns are just good out of the box.  I have XDs, XDms, Glocks, Tauruses, HK, Rugers, and more polymer guns, and the Beretta has been the only problem.  But you can never completely eliminate quality issues.  As long as they do a good job of taking care of them when they do happen, that's all that we can hope for.

I sent my Glock 17 back to the factory a couple years ago to have the slide and barrel refinished..... I bought it used and it looked like it had seen long hard service in its past life (seriously, it looked like the M9s you see our service men carrying in the sand box). I always wanted it to look as good as it shoots, so I sent it in to refinish it..... turn around time was fast, but I dont really remember how long it took. They also replaced all the internals for free.... springs, firing pin, etc.... I was happy with the entire experience.
Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Country Music.

Getting back on subject.... Is the striker retaining pin above the surface of the top of the slide? It should ride a couple of thousands below the surface... If you can feel it it needs to be peened back in.... You can tap it flush with a hammer and a bit of cloth to prevent marring the surface... If it comes out again, then it is a defective pin and a call to Springfield will have several of them in the mail free of charge or they will replace it if you mail it back to them... They are also well know for sending an extra mag for your trouble!!!

It's a 1/8th inch punch you need for the striker retaining pin.... 4 bucks for that is cheaper than mailing it back... The backstrap pin comes out nicely with a 3/32 hex key (allen wrench) which I bet you have handy in your toolbox or you can get an extra for a quarter at the hardware store...

Cheers,
Scott
