Stop Screaming - Start Shooting

There is this video being sent around of this horrible incident, where an officer is supposedly killed. There are a lot of places where I thought to myself that it was time to start shooting. Of course, I was watching this video knowing that the officer had been killed and that influenced my thoughts. I'm wondering at what point the rest of you think is the time for lethal force. May none of us ever be in this situation.

Damn! I know nothing about Frontsight and really don't care to debate the ethics of posting this. Done is done. Still, the fact that the officer said the words "drop the gun now", to a clearly disturbed individual is beyond above and beyond. Saying it once is heroic, saying it twice is stupid. Once he has the gun he is a target, nothing more. And the Frontsight CEO, scum bag or great American, take your pick because I don't know squat about him, is right. This officer needed an attitude adjustment that would have saved his life. I am all in favor of verbal judo and keeping the gun and taser in the holsters. However, there is a time when its not a question of could versus should, but rather one of must do or die. This was the latter. The training he needed was the willingness to actually pull the trigger. I don't know if his hesitancy was personal, religious, or a result of departmental policy. But if you won't use it, you shouldn't carry it. That lesson hit me on a dark Charleston street a few months back. I faced a couple of muggers with no harm and no noise. Thing is, I had about 5 seconds to decide whether I would kill a man or not. I realized I would (that was something that required some prayer and a confession later). Thing is, in a very few seconds, I decided I'd pull the trigger, this guy wouldn't when he should have. Its a lesson for all of us. I'm glad this was posted and I will pray for the cop.

Deputy Kyle Dinkheller was shot and killed after pulling over a man on a rural road about 6 miles north of Dublin, Georgia. During the traffic stop he called in for backup. Before the backup arrived he was shot by the man with a rifle. He was able to return fire, striking the suspect in the stomach. The suspect was found during a search the next morning and taken into custody.

The entire incident was videotaped by a camera in Deputy Dinkheller's patrol car. On January 28, 2000, the suspect was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death two days later.

Deputy Dinkheller is survived by his expectant wife and 22-month-old daughter. Deputy Dinkheller's son was born in early September 1998.

Deputy Kyle Dinkheller (Lawrence County, GA Sheriff's Office) had been reprimanded days before for "unnecessarily" drawing his weapon.

Consensus at the time amongst LEOs was that this reprimand caused his hesitation and ultimately lead to his death.

I hate watching those kinds of videos.   At the same time they can be great mind training tools.  I am humbled and broken to see a fellow brother go down like that, and while I also hate to monday morning quarterback a situation like this : this officer failed to act at the proper time.  Being alone with backup a ways off, with a crazed subject like that... my opinion is, the officer should have opened fire as soon as he saw the rifle come out.  enough said - this video hurts.

If the message is to get some real world training because bad thing happen to people who think they are prepared, well I can deal with it.

If the message is I can make you Super Ninja Sr. class, shoot better than a SEAL or SWAT cop, because I’m the Oracle of Self Defense, then it’s a real cheap shot.  IMHO that seems to be the Front Sight message.

I will admit I get these emails from some folks who send them out as teaching aids and I find them useful.  If some one survives because they learned about being caught up in a behavioral loop, well then the deputy’s death has some meaning.

There was a tape of a car video of a LEO gang rushed and murdered that was shown as part of an Officer Survival course. Months later when the same type attack began to unfold the officer remembered the lesson and was able to survive the incident.
