Random thoughts on Fred's campaign
« on: January 04, 2008, 07:30:06 AM »
There weren't enuff one issue 2nd amendment voters in Ia to give Fred the W. No doubt many 2A voters were attracted to the Huckster.

The polls in the last week showed Huckster winning and Fred and McCain battling for third. The polls were right.

It will be interesting to read the chapter on Fred when a history of the 2008 campaign is written. From my perspective (which could be wrong) Fred's campaign, like Howard Dean's, was a internet phenomenon. Like Dean, Fred's campaign went bust.

It doesn't matter if a candidate is "the only real conservative" and "right on guns" if he doesn't get out and campaign for the job. You have to make voters WANT to vote for you. Fred failed.

The early comparisons to Reagan were way off the mark. Reagan was a successful two term guv of CA and had made a serious run at the 1976 nomination by the time 1980 rolled around. Fred erved 1 1/3 terms as a senator where he did nothing noteworthy and he quit the senate in 2002 when he could have been easily reelcted.

It is hard to see how Fred carries on. He is at the bottom of the heap in NH. He won't be competitive in MI. By the time SC rolls around the people of SC will be focused upon the 1st/2nd place finishers in IA, NH, & MI. Remember the sheeple effect, voters want to make a choice between perceived winners. Fred won't be in the running. And any scenario that has Fred winning states on Super Tuesday is a fantasy. Fred will stay in until after NH just to show up Politico.com (and the staffer who leaked the info). He may even stay in until SC. But the Fred moment has passed.
