Beretta 96 Basket Case ***Need an Armorer***HELP PLEASE?
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:27:14 PM »
Hello,

I'm not certain if I have this in the right section so please relocate it if I messed up.

I have a Beretta 96 Centurion complete basket case.  I mean complete.  I bought it in bags, but have no idea how to put it back together.  I figured for $25 is was worth the risk.

Is there a Beretta Armorer out there willing to take on a basket case?  I would like to get it together and working if possible.

Seems a shame to let a good gun go to waste.  As best I can tell from the schematic, all the parts are present.  It probably needs the pins and springs replaced though.

Any help will be truly appreciated.

Thank you,
Scott

For $25 it sounds like a good gamble. I would think any comptant gunsmith could do it for you, its a very common pistol. If you don't need anything more than springs you should just be looking at a couple hours labor tops. Of course, you could always call the factory and say "oops" and see what they'll do. ;D

I tried some of the local guys and they seem to shy away from it.  They claim that it is nearly impossible to get parts out of Beretta.  Does that sound right?  I live in the land of Sig.  Heck, even I'm a Sig Armorer, but no Beretta folks.

If I can't find a forum member to do it, I will have to see if I can get Beretta to do it for me or refer me to an armorer.

Thanks for the help!

Stay Safe,
Scott

I just ordered several parts for a Beretta from Brownells.com and they were on back order at the time I placed the order and they were only about 2 weeks from getting them.  Brownells also has schematics if you are attempting to do this yourself.  It doesn't sound as if you are though.  Good luck whatever you do!

PM Operator. He quoted me a more than fair pice for sporterizing a Moisin. I think I'll pass as by the time I'm done with it I'm more than halfway to an AK when you throw in transfer fees and shipping, but I'd trust him to do the job right at a good price. Just my .02.

It was a FUNCTIONAL gun before it was disassembled right?
Contacting the factory or a Beretta Dealer might be your best bet.  If you're military or LE they will replace all the springs/pins and true it all up, probably for free.  Otherwise I'm sure there would be a parts/service charge.  Since it was only $25 with any charge you'd still be ahead of a new one!

I WAS a qualified Beretta Armorer, it expires after 3 yrs but the basics never change and I haven't been back.  There aren't any real heavy "gotchas" with them.  The one thing I won't touch, and Beretta specifies it HAS to return to the factory for, is reattaching the locking block to the barrel.  There is a fitting process that to many people weren't doing right and all it did was shear the block.
Doesn't require any really special tools either.  Screwdriver, a set of punches and a "spring hook" (nothing more than a small crochet hook with the end flattened).

When seconds mean the difference between life and death, the police will be minutes away.

You are either SOLVING the problem, or you ARE the problem.

I'm not certain if it was functional before.  I bought it portioned out into small bags.

I have a schematic from Beretta's web site so I think I'll give it a try.  What's the worst that could happen? :-\

Thanks for the advice!
