Ruger Is Getting Better !
« on: March 09, 2010, 08:02:46 AM »
I just thought I'd mention that last week when we purchased the new Ruger Mark III pistol, I was very pleased to find just how much Ruger has improved the packaging of their handguns. Gone is the cheap, plastic, snap shut box with the molded in hinge that allowed the gun to rattle around unpadded. This new Ruger came in a nice, foam padded hard case almost identical to the cases Sig Sauer and Kimber package their handguns in. It has the nice sliding locking latches on each side, and will make an excellent to and from the range carrying case.

The gun also had a small vial containing extra fiber optic inserts for the front sight in different colors. The case also has the large Ruger "Falcon" logo in red on the side of the box. It was a really nice set up that I'm sure will reduce shipping damage from the factory into your hands.   Bill T.

Please stop teasing me with pictures of that work of art!  Absolutely gorgeous.  I'm glad that it will be safely transported too!

This is another Ruger .22 semi auto I picked up a couple of years back. It is the last run of Mark II's Ruger made. It's a Bill Ruger / NRA Commemorative Model. Davidson's had them for barely more than the standard 4" model. I have since used Bonanza Gold to fill in the roll engraving, and it really turned out well. It has the nice reddish Cocobolo grips similar to the Mark III.  Bill T.

I got this Stainless Mark II about 10 years ago. The scope is a Tasco, but the gun shoots better and more accurately than several rimfire rifles I own. For the money, the Ruger .22 semi's are pretty hard to beat.  Bill T.

I really hate you.   ;D

I picked up a Ruger Standard last year and love the little thing.  I rescued it from an attic and have done a lot of work to get it back to being a good shooter.  Now I want about twenty more of the little rascals.

One thing I would mention about the Ruger semi .22's is don't take them apart to clean them! It isn't really necessary. All I do with all 3 of mine is after a day at the range I use a coffee can full of clean Kerosene or WD-40. You can buy WD-40 in gallon size cans at Home Depot or Lowe's for around $12.00 a gallon. Pick up some of those cheap, imitation camel hair paint brushes from the painting dept. for about .50 cents a piece. Take the gun and while holding it over the coffee can, liberally, (God I hate that word), take the paint brush and dunk it in the Kerosene and brush out all of the chamber area and slide. Don't be afraid of the Kerosene or WD-40. Let it run everywhere. It won't hurt a thing. Not even the finish of the grips, be they plastic or wood. You will be amazed at the amount of crap that will flush out of the gun.

After you get clean solvent running out, use compressed air with a blow gun, (You can get both a small air compressor and hose and nozzle from Harbor Freight for under $50.00), to blow the entire gun dry to the touch. Both Kerosene as well as WD-40 evaporate quickly. WD smells better. Wipe everything down, then generously oil everything with a good grade of motor oil. I like Mobil 1 20W-50. If you live in a cold climate use 0W-20.

I do the same for bolts in bolt action rifles. I've NEVER taken one apart. The Kerosene / WD-40 paint brush method will get your guns just as clean and save a ton of cussing trying to put guns and bolts back together. The Cardinal rule you MUST FOLLOW with all guns is, they always come apart easier than they go back together. With this method there is far less cussing, and more joy!  Bill T.

I agree that most people should never take apart their Ruger Mark series but I actually enjoy the disassembly and reassembly of mine.  I am a very mechanically inclined person and I love seeing the inner workings of these little shooters.  I love the challenge of getting the hammer and hammer strut perfect every time.

This all good advice, and I think I may take you up on it for my AR (if that will work). My Glock...you can take the bolt apart? When did that happen? ;) BUT what I want is range porn. I'd like to see ten yard targets off the bench. I don't care how well you shoot (well, maybe a little ;D) I want to know how well the gun shoots. Please let us live vicariously.
FQ13 who really regrets selling his Browning Challenger. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but damned if I can remember what that idea was. :-\ :-[
