Looking for input on some signs
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:32:45 PM »
Take a look at this for me and see if it would attract your attention and strike you as a appealing promo item to draw business. I don't want to print a bunch if you'll think these would not attract.

The wording is too busy. I didnt even read it and your potential customers wont either.... you should stick with a few bullet points (no pun intended).

I'll keep this for more direct use and make a second more simplified version for high traffic areas. Would that be more acceptable?

No offense, but it needs help. I'm not a marketing major, but I have designed more than my share of yard signs, fliers and posters. Lets start with the positive. The picture (family friendly and non-Rambo) is good. Keep that. Like wise, the Bold text Ohio CCW is also good. People see the sign, get a fuzzy vibe off the photo, and know why they've just wasted ten seconds of their life looking at it. So far so good. Now, to get harsh IT'S A FREAKING SIGN/FLIER!!!!!! No-one will read the fine pint and they don't need to. You've gotten your point across already. Don't make their eyes glaze over. Put your name, a short list of quals and a number. Period, full stop. "Ohio CCW (the bold print). Then: Garand for life, qualified blah blah instructor. One line. Second line: new shooter friendly atmosphere, practical instruction, flexible hours, call 1(800) yada yada. If its a pamphlet print more, but my advice? Gear it to soccer moms. If you are printing more pics, make sure they are female and ideally  black or latina. You want to stick a pin in the "angry racist white boy" image up front. Sunshine and puppies. To draw in folks like us, stress practical, as opposed to tactical (do not use that word) applications. Its not about what you say, but how you say it. Just my .02 Hope this helps.

I'd start with a different photo.  The cars in the background are distracting, it's not sharp (shoot with the lens wide open to blur out the background and make sure to focus on her eyes), and she's not wearing eye protection.  Also, she should be the one holding the gun as it's assumed she's getting trained.

Also, leave extra room above the heads for text.  Think of it as a magazine cover.

Then we can talk about the layout and verbiage.

One other thought. When I see a sign like this, and I want the info, I find myself diggin my pen out of my pocket, then looking for a piece of paper to write on.

Instead, either include some business cards tacked below the sign, or turn the bottom of the sign into tear-off tabs with your contact info on it.

KISS - keep it simple.
