What do we want?
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:46:38 PM »
Michael -

I gotta say, today's podcast was absolutely the best you have done in a long time. And you do great shows every week. The information from the book was excellent, and helped me coalesce many of the events I either missed but had heard of, or had experienced first hand (no holsters at gun ranges, no rapid fire, etc.). You have previously mentioned John Biancchi's efforts with the NRA to identify what we want, and I personally laud his efforts. I was thinking about that as you were going through your comments after talking about the book, and then you mentioned it again.

So now I want to pose 2 questions to you and the DRTV denizens based on today's podcast:
1. What do we as lawful gun owners want in the way of legislative action?
2. Are we content to rely on the NRA to set the agenda?

You gave one excellent example for question #1 - CCW reciprocity. So folks, what else? What are the top 10 things we want to see added (e.g. national CCW reciprocity), revised (suppressors removed from the NFA), or done away with (1968 Gun Control Act).

As for #2, I think I am already giving away my bias here. I think the horizontal gun culture needs to drive this, and "allow" the NRA to advance those elements most suitable for them to address. The NSSF, JPFO, GOA and RKBA (and others) can also be involved. In other words, using the so-called "what do you carry" meme that went through the interw3bs not too long ago, let's build the list, maybe MB's blog can get it started, and let the rest of the culture chime in without being overruled or filtered by a professional organization.

Then, when there appears to be consensus on the list - which should take all of a month, or maybe never (  ;D ) - we go to the NRA et al. and push the agenda.

Thoughts?

BTW, personally, I do not think the anti-gun "movement" is dead. It is and has been a useful tool for the tools in kongress, and they can and will resurrect it at will. So we have to move as fast and hard as we can to secure our "beachhead" and be able to move out further. It is a battle, it is a war, and we need to fight it as such.

Repeal all regulations on small arms . The wild west was less violent than most of our "gun free" cities.
Eddie Eagle starting in Pre school, with a fire arms familiarization class in high school.
Deregulate suppressors.

Do NOT leave the NRA to set the agenda, it is not in their best interest to take the "Kill Shot" at the anti's so they will never "win".

1.  Delete the presidential order freezing MG's in public hands and allow new MG's in.
2.  Deregulate supressors.
3.  CCW National Reciprocity.
4.  Nationwide open carry, national parks first.
5.  MY NUMBER ONE DESIRE.....GET TOUGH LAWS TO PROTECT OUR CIVIL RIGHT.  FOR INSTANCE POLITICIANS THAT KNOWINGLY PASS UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS CONTRARY TO THE 2ND AMMENDMENT BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE 2ND AMMENDMENT, LIKE THE SLUGS IN CHICAGO, NEED TO GET A 5 YEAR PASS TO THE BIG HOUSE AT A MINIMUM.

MINIMUM STANDARDS WITH A MIRANDA-TYPE STATEMENT TO BE GIVEN TO EVERYONE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL RIGHTS PROTECTION FOR OUR CIVIL RIGHT TO THE 2ND AMMENDMENT.   YUP, THAT'S A KEEPER, CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT WHAT CANNOT BE DONE WHEN SOMEONE IN AUTHORITY WANTS TO HASSLE GUN OWNERS.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

Nationwide CCW Reciprocity leaps to mind.
A Nationwide Castle Doctrine with release from civil suits in cases of justified self defense.
Deregulate Suppressors.

And I like Rastus's list. Especially that last one.

So that's why it's #5 on your list? ? ? ? ? ?     ;D  ;D  ;D

Good start everyone, thanks. Keep the ideas, especially new ones, coming.

I have another to add:

Work at the state level to alleviate key legal restrictions on ownership, CCW and OC.

For example, I have extolled the wonders and virtues re' CCW in ND. Turns out, after taking the Utah/MN/ND class, I found out there are actually some "gotcha's" in the ND laws (not the Constitution. The biggest issue is no CCW in "public gatherings". Although the law specifies examples, such as church, sporting and political events, etc., it turns out that an aggressive anti-gunner could read this law in highly restrictive ways. In one case, a former PD Chief for Fargo said he considers malls to be "public gatherings".

So in keeping with Rastus' comments, we need to ensure that state laws are specific in their recognition of the citizen's freedoms, with strong penalties for politicians who pass and sign restrictions contrary to the Constitutions, laws and court rulings. It may be through key court rulings based on Heller and (if it goes our way) McDonald. Or it may be working through local organizations to pressure the legislatures to pass revisions - and recensions - of existing laws to comply with Federal and judicial rules.

I'll start first with #2, the NRA.  We need to get the NRA accountable again, they're good, but should be better.

And I'll just agree with all of the above, especially reforming local laws.  It's legal in Indiana to carry in state and now national parks I believe, but is illegal to carry in Indianapolis parks.  And our mayor likes it that way.

I once wrote a piece for the WALL STREET JOURNAL on this very topic after W was elected...at least we got a sunsetting of the AWB!

My list would be similar to several others on this Forum:

• National reciprocity of concealed carry (although, ideally, permitless carry of any sort)
• Recognition of open carry, including in national parks
• Preemption laws limiting cities and counties opting out of concealed/open carry
• Deregulation of suppressors, SBS and SBR — it should not be a federal felony for your rifle to be 1/64th inch too short!
• Castle doctrine nationwide
• No civil liability for legitimate self-defense shooting (currently part of Colorado's "Make My Day" law for home self-defense shootings)
• Nationwide FOPA travel, including airports
• Firearms safety training in schools (and an end to the ridiculous "zero tolerance" rules that get children suspended for drawing a picture of a gun!)
• 50% of firearms excise tax dedicated to range creation and sport shooting...taxation without representation is still tyranny
• Mandatory training for LEOs on firearms laws

Also, the NRA shoudl do what the NRA can do, but we have let the NRA and NSSF set the agendas for FAR TOO LONG, and they have not done a great job of it. If the people lead, the leaders will follow...
