Need Computer Help, With Poll Question
« on: March 13, 2010, 12:18:16 PM »
Hoping the Gun Totin' Geek Squad, can come to the rescue.

This morning my desktop, (2years old with Windows XP), in my home office, siad "Updates Are Ready To Be Installed" with the little Microsoft icon,....

After successful installation, it asked if I would like to restart my computer now.

I clicked yes, and went and got another cup of coffee. While I was out of the room, Satan's little helpers that work for Bill Gates, came in and gave me the black screen that asked if I would like to start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Good Configuration, or Normally.

I click normally, and it clicks blank for a few seconds, and than brings that same screen up again. Try safe mode, same thing, last good config, same thing, all options bring me back to the same page. >:(

Is there a solution? Everything prior to the update was fine.

Before I take to the rifle range, is there an option?

Thank you.

Hang in there TW.  I bet we can fix it.

I see you say "all options" bring it back to same screen so I am going to assume you tried 'last good config'.

Is there stuff on the disk you REALLY want to save?

If not stick the original disk in it and start it up with that.  It will PROBABLY ask if you want to reinstall or fix.

Try FIX first.

Guns you'd da man!! If it don't say Mac it ain't worth crap!! I still like my PC but my Mac has gone 14 months and not one problem that wasn't -ID 10 T- related. This problem TW is having is probably related to an installation issue with the latest security updates. So what I recommended was to try restarting and booting from a Windows Install disk. Once he's in Windows running a System Restore to an earlier restore point should undo the damage.

Mine did the same thing a few weeks back and seemed to be related to IE 8.0 because that's when my system really started behaving badly.

Couldn't do a restore so I reformatted the hard drive and started over.  It's back (sort of) but she's old and tired and probably going to the range this spring or summer.  I figure 230 gr JHP will fix her up right spiffy! ;D  Need to rotate my carry ammo for the 1911 anyway.

I'm torn between the grand a IMac will cost or a few hundred another PC would set me back.

I'd go with the iMac only because the longevity Macs have. Unlike PC platforms Apple supports it's products longer in terms of updates and software availability. They also seem to perform better longer. Mine doesn't feel any less snappy now than it did a year ago. Just my .50 cents. Yeah the cost is a little higher for a Mac so I figure what the heck .02 won't cover it. Not to mention, have you seen the screen on the iMacs in person? WOW!

I've gotten 7-8 years out of my PC's, this one is a that old now.  I don't need a system at home other than to email, talk to you fine folks, upload some music, store some pictures and research guns.  I can do most of that these days with a cell phone!

I'm thinking one of those throw away notebooks for 200 bucks.  I can afford anything I want but that doesn't mean I NEED to spend the money.  Besides, the 800 saved goes to that lever gun I've been threatening to buy for the last year or 2400 rounds of .45 ACP.....

I'm torn between the grand a IMac will cost or a few hundred another PC would set me back.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had problems with the Windows OS, and I've had everything from the earliest versions to Vista and Win 7.  As far as the longevity of PCs issue goes, I bought a new laptop about two years ago, which is doing great, and it replaced a Dell that had been in service for 7+ years.  (When I buy, I deck them out and upgrade as needed to keep them functionally relevant.) My time may be coming, but until I experience the "gremlins" I'll skip the extra cost and smaller selection of software associated with the Mac.
