Men's wallet recommendation
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:21:17 AM »
Team,

After almost fifteen years of faithful service, since I was eight, my billfold has seen better days.  I need to buy a new one and I've got no idea where to start.  I'm looking for a leather bi-fold, and mainly brand recommendations.  What brand is going to last me for the rest of time at under fifty bucks?

Thanks

My advice? Go to Marshalls or TJ Max. They have some great deals on pretty much everything from socks, to belts, to wallets. I hate shopping for clothes there, because nothing's organized and I'm the kind of guy who wants  to get into, and out of, the store in about 15 minutes tops. Their prices can't be beat though, particularly for accessories like walletts and belts and ties. Same brands, at less than half the price of Macy's or Dillard's. I buy a new wallet about once every ten years. I just picked up a new Ralph Lauren, butter soft, bi-fold for $15 dollars. I expecct to get ten years out of this one too. Suck it up, fight your waythrough the soccer moms and save serious money. It sucks, but you'll only do it once every ten to fifteen years. ;D

I went for the thinnest wallet I could find.

I came up with this.  It is thinner loaded with all the cards and stack of bills I need to carry than any leather wallet is empty.

It is rugged enough.

Thought I'd like to it for those who want something other than traditional

I switched to nylon after my leather wallet rotted and fell apart.

The weak link in any wallet is the stitching. I fish (a lot) and my wallets are continuously getting wet. What happens is that the threads in the sleeves that seperate the credid cards etc. rot and fail. When this happens you pull your wallet out and scatter plastic and your DL on the floor. I don't care about how ratty they look (and all of mine have looked ratty before I've replaced them), its that moment of failure that tells me its time to retire "old faithful" and get a new one. Again, I'd save my money on buffalo/iguana hide/kevlar fiber, wonder wallet. Its the cotton thread that will get you. Buy a cheap wallet from a decent maker at a discount store and figure its good for 5-15 years.
