Going to play devils advocate.
Was this dog on the owners property or roaming at large on some one elses? I assume a responsible dog owner wouldnt 1) allow his dog to roam around their own place with traps set and 2) shouldnt allow their pet to run around on their neighbours place full stop.

Personally if I saw a stray dog running on my farm I did not recognise then it would be worm bait. No ifs/buts or hows ya father.

That said if it was a case of the dog being where it was not supposed to be then the person who shot it had a responsability to euthanise the animal in a humane manner not plonk 4 pellets in its head and hope for the best and walk away. That action is bloody disgusting.

I agree this is really awful, but what we don't know, was how was the hurt dog reacting to the person who shot him? I could see him being really docile or really upset about his predicament, I could see myself, trying to calm him, with a soft caring voice and maybe some food or water if I had it, in order to release him, if that did not work, thinking here is a mistake, and this animal is suffering, at least I can stop that.  I am assuming the animal was still squirming and trying to extricate himself from that trap, after the shots were fired,  and that's why he was found in the trap, instead of being released and left for or thought dead. This is all assumption, and I could hope the shooter might come forth, with  the why. I have found suffering animals in the wild and shot them, once I blew a deer tag on a gut shot yearling, because it was the right thing to do. The meat was already ruined, but it was not suffering anymore.

Agreed!  That is one thing I can't stand is people that can't keep their pets to themselves.  Do it right though.

On my place we have a rancher's lease with a breeding operations for cattle and sheep. He loses stock to the coyotes. He is also a licensed state trapper. He puts out snares and cyanide pop ups. And he actively hunts the coyotes.

That said, my ridgebacks are totally under my control at all times and I know where all the traps are. I ran into three of the neighbors pups running free on our place, albeit right on the border, and they were running at me. They almost bought it right there. But I recognized they weren't on the attack. That saved their bacon. They went back down their road to their place. I didn't have the time to go down after them and give the owners some sage advice since I was on foot and pig hunting at the time. But I went down later and they were all gone. The rancher wouldn't have thought twice to put these pups down and hang them from the fence to protect his stock.

In this case it sounds to me like someone didn't take the responsiblity to ensure that their dog was where it was supposed to be, and on property that runs stock that is a death sentence for the dog.
