An honest man. I wish there were a thousand more just like him. What I wish for more though, is that us secular (ie. pluralist) small L liberals (meaning belief in democracy, equality, capitalism human rights, respect for all faiths et.) would have the balls to be as honest. We seem to have three responses. One is bigoted "I hate all muslims" jingoism. The second is cringing white (capital L)liberal "its just an alternative point of view" BS. The third, and the most common and deadly, is to stick our heads in the sand and pretend that that these guys ae are ignorant, crazy, or irrelevant and thus can be ignored. All three roads lead to disaster. Classical Liberalism must once again become a fighting faith. We were when we deposed the crowned heads of Europe and exposed the "Divine Right" of kings as so much BS. We did it it again when we stood against facism and communism in a war of ideas as much as bullets, and we must do so again. We need to cowboy up, state clearly and without apology what we we belive and why we believe it and point out that this guy represents a return to the middle ages and we aren't going there again. We need to stop teaching students to apologize for the West's very real crimes, but instead to defend and take pride in its equally real and far more important virtue. Man made law vs God given law? Sounds like an easy choice until you remember that its men who decide what God wants and that they are answerable to no one but themselves. We played this game with Christian zealots like Calvin, Cromwell and the inquisition. Damned if we'll play it again with the muslims. This guy lays out a foundational challenge to liberalism. Good! We should be able to answer and refute that challenge. God help us if we are too weak with self-imposed guilt to do so.
