Cabela's now stocks Exploding Targets! I believe these are the Tannerite type that are used in a lot of the bigger full auto machine gun shoots. They are inert until you mix the ingredients, and then they are still very safe to handle, but not ship. They require a 40 grain bullet at 2,200 FPS, (.223), to detonate. These seem to be priced a little cheaper than I've seen them in the past.

I was at a desert shoot a couple of years back and a guy had a 5 pound batch mixed. He set it out at about 150 yards. It was in a plastic jug like the kind water comes in. He shot it with a Springfield M-1A. When it went off you could feel the concussion in your chest! It went off with a huge cloud of white and yellow smoke. Great for when things get boring at the range, providing you're out in the sticks.  Bill T.

We talked about this a while back when History Channel (or maybe Discovery) did a show about people shooting these up. About all the major online outfitters are selling them now too. I think they would be a lot of fun, I just dont have anywhere to enjoy them.
Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Country Music.

Those sound like fun. Just make sure you don't run afoul of the fire control folks. They will hang your ass for stuff like that in the dry season.

One of the guys at work tried out his Mosin 9130 this past weekend on Tannerite. He said he started out with a half pound, then tried a lb. He showed me the picture of the stump it was on after touching off 1.5 lb.

He blew the side of the stump off and some of the flying wood chunks came back and hit him. I don't think he read the safe distance part.

Any bets on how long it takes to ban Tannerite to individuals once the mainstream media starts running stories on it, or someone blows themselves up?

I think we've found a new question for the "You might be a reneck if...." Category. If you think filling and old fridge with gasoline and tannerite, and then standing within range of the shrapnel,is a good idea, then you might just be redneck. ;D ::)
FQ13 who is wondering if the orders from Iraq and Afghanistan are going to start coming in, from both sides. ;)

Mild explosive compound + original plastic container + shot with high powered rifle= expensive fun and a big boom.

Mild explosive compound + enclosed metal appliance + shot with high powered rifle= instant Claymore Anti-Personnel Mine and an expensive trip to the ER.

My range allows Tannerite, makes a nice little ka-boom when used in moderation. ie Dixie Cup, or small tupperware.

Really focuses on accuracy. Takes a high speed round to set off.

Adding gas, and a large amount = Darwin Candidate, and/or idiot.

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

when gas was cheap( less then a buck)  we use to take gallon milk jugs, fill then with gas, put a candle behind them, then try to hit them with a M1  at 200-400 yds  at night.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

At my friends fun gun shoot last year we mixed enough to fill a gallon jug and set in an old dodge dakota.  It was at the far end of the range and when it went off the cab went about 50 feet in the air.  That was a crowd pleaser.
