FQ13, who is wary of a requirement to produce papers on demand unless you're driving, but the cop should be able to call your name, description and ssn in and get confirmation that you are who you say you are and are a citizen. If you're a legal immigrant, you are already required to carry ID by federal law. If you're illegal, I'll see your adios and raise you a vaya con dios, or maybe just a vaya, prefferably yesterday.

Same as if you don't have your fishing licence here in Fl. You give the officer your name, address, DOB, SSN and he calls it it in. If it comes back to a 90 year old guy or a black woman you have a problem. If its a 6'2" white guy and the address etc checks out, its probably me and I walk away with no fine. Its happened to me twice and took less than five minutes. Both as pleasant an experience as being detained by The Man can be.

I don't carry my Soc. Card in my wallet on the off chance it might get stolen.  My wife had hers in her purse that was stolen at a resturaunt (After she explicitly told her sister to keep an eye on it.) and was dealing with attepted credit fraud within on hour of it being stolen.

Fixing your identity is a real pain.  Keep the card at home in your gun vault.

If I don't have one, or are "playing No Habla" games,  than the red flags are allowed to be raised. Doesn't matter if your Lithuanian, Ethiopian, Swedish, or just a redneck.

BUT, should you not (due to a previous infraction that initiated a LEO talking with me), NOT have ID, ...well than...it's simple:

1) Who the hell are you.
2) Why the hell are you here.
3) What business do you have doing what your doing that caused me to talk to you in the first place.
4) No, this is not play time.

Fail any one of these, and get a one way ticket.

Lucky Floridians don't like the ice, because you try not carrying your licenses up here and it will be deep do do.  In some cases you will get the chance to fight the fine in court, but in many there are other penalties that you will just wish you had remembered to carry it as the law says.  Either way, I think that if they have reason to suspect and ask for the proof you are facing some other issue to make the calling in of your claims beyond standard procedure anyway.

How about we just accept the fact that you need to carry your id with you ... like us baby boomers were taught in elementary school, and file this right along with the First Amendment does not protect you against yelling "fire" in a theater.

There was a commonly used law in the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's called vagrancy.  The beginning of Rambo's problems was not some far fetched idea the writers of the movie had.  This was a very common tool used by law enforcement.  I was taught in civics classes that everyone should always carry their identification, a $10 bill in your wallet, and change for the payphone at all times.  This not only gave proof of who you were and a little cash for emergencies, but it could save you from the charges of vagrancy and no visible means of support, and a long cold weekend in some cold backwoods jail.

I know these laws were used in northern California, Oregon and Washington back in the 60's and 70's to clear "hippies" from public lands, and as recent as ten years ago they were being used by many small communities to get "people at risk" off the park benches and into shelters.

I can tell you from first hand experience that just because a name and address someone gives you checks out DOESN'T mean it's correct.

Can't tell you how many Juan Sanchez's we had working the fields ON BASE in Lemoore.  Half the time the name and address is legit to SOMEONE in the house, just not necessarily the guy in front of you.

A while back I saw a 20/20 where they sent a guy into a Cargil plant in the Mid-West with a fake SSN they had purchased.  The background check for hiring didn't flag.  Searching records, there were four-five people with the same SSN, including two more at different Cargil plants in other states.  Once they traced it back a little the SSN originally belonged to a homeless guy in Puerto Rico.
