Your thoughts?
« on: May 18, 2010, 02:32:46 PM »
I'm thinking about trading in my 92fs for another 9mm.  I don't have any desire to own anything in .40SW, and the .45 will be coming along shortly.  These are the models I am thinking about, and that I can afford.

I must be evolving or something, because Glock actually made the list.   ;D

Yes, there have been many similar polls in the past, but this one is different...it's mine.  So let's hear it.  I'm all ears.

If you want the Glock 19 you should wait and get the 4th Gen. The way it looks, the perceived recoil is greatly reduce by the dual recoil spring.

I love my Glocks, but if it were not on the list my choices would be in this order:

S&W
FN
XDM
XD

Whatchya' want it for? Plinking, CCW, house gun, IDPA? The correct answer is still Glock, but it might help the less enlightened make their calls. ;D Serously the're all good, but for the $550ish price, and much less used, its hard to beat the G-19.

I have a FNP-9 and have been nothing but happy with it.  Reliable, accurate, and good ergonomics.  I haven't handled a FNX yet so I can't speak to them.  Now that I've said that, what little I have handled the XDm, I have liked the ergonomics and balance of it.  I'm not a Glock fan due to the ergonomics but I know many that swear by them.  The S&W seems top heavy and I didn't like the trigger much.

I serious doubt you'll not be happy whichever way you decide to go.

Thank you, Eric.  I forgot about that part.

This will be mainly for home defense and target shooting, with some concealed carry thrown into the mix.  And if I ever get the chance and time to take some defensive courses, this will be the one I'd be taking with me.

I traded my 2 Beretta 92fs' for a Glock 19 and a 22. The Berettas both had problems from day 1, not that there aren't good ones. I have a 96 Centurion that is great. The Glocks are great out of the box.

I have a CZ75 SP01 Phantom and love it.  It has the hammer drop.  Can't get with the FNP.  Almost bought an as new Glock 19 without finger grooves recently and could kick myself for not doing it.  Also looking for a Glock 26 without FG's for carry.  I would probably need to go to a range to fire each just to be sure but that is a big expense.  Probably would rule out the XD only because I like the XDM better, especially the sights.  Don't like the 3.8 though.  Waiting to see if the sub-compact comes out...might add one to my stable of carry guns.  Prefer anything without a thumb safety except the 1911 because I have a custom TS on them but can't get one made for anything else.

Thanks Richard.  I added the CZ75 to the list.  I rented one at a range a couple of years ago and was really impressed with its accuracy.  The SP01 variants look good, too.

I've shot G19/17s and XD45s and I like the feel of the XD way more than the Glock only because when I bring the gun up it almost instinctively lines up on target, something the Glock never did. Overall I chose the M&P9 just because when all the dust settled it was my favorite of what's on the list and my favorite M&P of all. After spending a long few days at the range with over 500 rounds through it the trigger just fit me and for my has been the most accurate at getting rounds on target repeatedly with the best level of accuracy. The gun is very soft shooting and returns to target naturally. In terms of flexibility I've found that the M&P is, of all my carry guns, the easiest to carry even being full size. After having owned 4 different M&Ps in different calibers and sizes and after owning several glocks, I have to say the M&P is what really amazed me with it's near perfect reliability an with exceptional service from S&W. I've put a total of 4,000+ rounds through the M&P family and only had issues with lead rounds in .40S&W in cold weather, that's it.
I would love some trigger time with the FN though, I really want on in 45.
