Marshal'ette, 2 suggestions, I tried a Taurus millenium 9mm recently and liked it alot, although being striker fired it has a longer trigger pull than I prefer, since you SEEM to shoot alot of single action that may be an issue, Also, for economy the Hungarian PA-63 in 9mm Makarov may be an option, it's a copy of the Walther PP series for under $200.
The one I bought needs a seriuos trigger job, and being small and light it kicks more than you would expect but mine groups under 2 inches at 10 yards. I saw an ad in Shotgun News J and G sales has them for $100 (WWW.jgsales.com)

I'm gonna go against the grain and suggest a Smith and Wesson 910S.  'Cuz I like the '59 series, and I like the slide-safety.  Being a southpaw, I'd add in an ambi-catch.

I don't shoot a lot of single actions actually.. I own a pair of beauty 38's but  I shoot single actions "sometimes".. and they are fun.. ( what gun isn't fun to shoot) and although I have high powered rifles ( deer and coyote hunting) and lots of 22's.. ( squirrel, rabbits ..and snakes ) and shotguns
( dove, sporting clays and trap) and a 9mm, I really haven't owned a wide variety of the "muscle guns"..
I'm listening to you all ..and I am learning.. and I think when the time comes.( in April) I may be a bit more informed as to what may work for me best.
( I liked the advice from Don.. I first have to decide how I will carry it the most) I am not particular crazy about having it in my purse... not real handy in a snap crisis.. but I'll figure it out..
Thanks to all who are chiming in.. I appreciate it..  :-*

If you have the money, I'd get a AR-15.  Here in Nebraska, there are rumors that the anti-gunners are after them, and I expect that would be a nationwide trends since they are so popular...  Marshalette, look at the Lady Smith's they are built for woman and have both revolvers and pistols...

I would get another good quality 1911, a tacticle shot gun or parts to turn mine into one,and probably something on the ar15 or fal platform. But, what I will end up with is the Richards and Mason conversion I have laid away. I might try to find a 4 inch barelled S&W 629  some where.

My plan is to review resent gun bans that have either expired or been beat back, review the items on the lists compared to what I would like to have or already have, and make my purchases accordingly.

I believe that we are already on borrowed time with the changes made at State and Federal levels in '06.  If we lose any more ground this fall the items they thought they had gotten rid of in the past, or have tried to ban recently, will be the foundation of the next sweep.

My order of purchases, based on cash available (good thing the kids are within a few months of finishing college) is #1 scary things that are on reprieve from a past ban; #2 things on a list of try to get rid of; and #3 items missed on those lists but similar.  I will start with items for guns I already have (mags, stocks, grips, bayonets (because I'm just dieing to commit a drive-by stabbing), comps, etc.).
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

First to the original question...A black rifle, plenty of mags and ammo.  As money permits pick up high cap mags for other guns to sell or trade when the going gets tough.  Prices/value will go up.

Marshal'ette...a small 9mm - Kahr, Para, STI and etc.  Then check around for a holster made specifically for women based on expert opinions of the carry option you choose.  Remember, any draw under pressure is a problem for most of us.

Looks like this subject has been COVERED....

But "They" want these  >:( and so you should get them first:

Semi-auto rifle with all the necessaries and AMMO
Semi-auto handgun with all the necessaries and AMMO
any .50 Cal weapon with all the necessaries and AMMO
safe to hold the above

Once you have these basic NECESSITIES you can go wild for what ever else floats your boat...
