Too late.  He did that last year.  Though I heard a rumor they steamed cleaned the memorial steps and walkway on 6/1.

Agreed.  When I got my first paycheck from the Army, I was making $67/mo.

And it ticked me off to see taxes taken out of that amount. 

On active duty you are willing to contribute your life for the good of the country...that is enough don't make them pay for the other BS for which congress sucks up their money.

Actually, I really like this idea. This is for two reasons. First, its only fair that those on active duty should be able to say "Thanks, but I gave at the office". ;)
Lets look at vets though. If we extend this to cover those who have spent 25 years in active Reserve or Guard service, what would we see? I'm betting a radical shift in the demographics of the military. Right now, it tends to be the poor and the brown who enlist. Now imagine a no income tax after you hit 43 provision (assuming you enlist at 18). Anyone want to bet we wouldn't have seen a Major Trump or a Commander Gates? I'm betting a lot more Catain Doctors. How many wealthy families would urge their kids to join the Guard or do ROTC? It would do as much to redemocratize our Army as Truman did in 1948. Just my .02.

Kinda going off thread...surprise!

But, if the Military had paid a decent wage, regardless of the tax thing or the SS thing as well, I would have made it a career.  I seperated in '79 making 564 bucks a month.  A month later, I made 500 bucks a WEEK working at General Motors for LESS hours worked.  

Remember that this memorial weekend, there are men and woman getting shot at and dying for minimum wage!

Tim, 2 things, Military pay is MUCH better than when we were in, currently a Pvt makes about 3 times what I did.
Secondly, Troops are not hourly employees so min. wage does not apply. I assume they would be considered "Salaried".
(usually a crappy deal as it saves the employer OT pay. )

E-1 Pay without combat pay is 1447 a month today.  Combat pay is about 150 bucks.  While in country, they get no allowances for quarters or food so that works out to about 10 bucks an hour assuming 160 hours of work which we all know is more like 400 hours.

At GM, I was making $11.88/hr second shift as a welder working about 48 hours a week.  My gig at GM lasted 88 days and they laid me off, after that I became a bartender and started hauling in money by the truckload.........

Forgot where I left it though!   ;D
