I can't wait to get my daughter shooting. She's only 3 but is already showing interest because her big brother shoots and she wants to do everything he does. The Savage Cub is a great starter, that was my son's 5th birthday present. For his 6th birthday I got him a M&P22. I was going to build him a dedicated .22 AR but the M&P was so light weight (I know, plastic) and I got such a good deal on it when I bought it ($375) I figured it was the best deal. For his 7th birthday he and I are building a 5.56 AR together going for a ultra-light tactical. Magpul MOE stock and handguards over a 14.5" ultralight taper barrel with fixed flash hider. He already has "helped" me build a few rifles, handing me punches etc. and always help with the gun cleaning duties. He also took pictures of his range time in to school for show and tell, small towns and private schools are great.
