Preacher's Kids : How Bad Are They?
« on: June 06, 2010, 01:04:19 AM »
I posted this topic because I just got an email from my best high school friend announcing the birth of a daughter. We shared a phone call which brought up old memories. His dad was the priest at an Episcopal Church. When my friend Ted, the old man and his mom went away to deal with his sister's complicated pregnancy, they left his younger brother Theo alone for 4 weeks. He was fifteen. Bad idea. I, as the responsible college freshman and semi-adopted son, was put in charge of making sure he didn't burn the house down while he went to summer school for having flunked math (been there, done that, got the T shirt). Also a bad idea. Anyway, I call Theo one day, to make sure he's still alive. The answering machine picks up " BONG (sound of a chinese gong Theo had bought for his band). Pause...You have reached the home of the Holy Man La!!@#$%(name deleted). BONG! Here, sins are forgiven and hypocrisy justified, all for $19.99 a month. For prior iindulgences..pauses....BONG...$100 for venal sins, mortal sins are negotiable. BONG..Thank you for calling the Holy Man La@##$. I tore him a new one. What I didn't realize was that he left the same damn thing on the Church's machine, with no one being the wiser.  ;D The damn thing was up and running for nearly a month. A stumbling block? Try an offensive guard. ;D Twenty years later and that still makes me laugh. Anyone have similar stories to share?

My dad was a Wesleyan Pastor (this part of the reason John Wesley Hardin is THE most intriguing western figure for me, but that's another story for another time).

Back when my sister was in high school in the '90's my sister had a toy cell phone that she took our Christian Academy and told one of the teachers that she had an important call that would probably come in during the class.  Well, she hit the ringer and the teacher kindly let her 'talk on the phone.'  Later one of the other students let it slip that it was fake and the teacher got a bright idea to play a trick on the elderly secretary.  For TWO days they played with that thing at school.

Don't know that I can define a "preacher," but Chunk can get preachy  ;D

What's a peacher?

Must be a derogatory term aimed at the fine folks down in Georgia.  Get 'em Peg!   ;D

They grow better peaches in Texas. Fredricksburg to be precise. I'm not a huge fan, except in ice cream, but I can tell you that homemade peach ice cream with Tx. peaches is a very special thing.

How bad are they?  How about bad to the bone.  My grandfather started his career as a circuit riding Lutheran minister in west Texas and New Mexico in the early 1900's and into the deprssion years.  First by horseback and buggy, later trains.  There were 9 children in his family and my father and several of my aunts and uncles became Lutheran school teachers and one uncle followed in my grandfathers footsteps and became a preacher also.  From the stories I have heard of my aunts and uncles growing up and what I have seen of some of my cousins, I'm surprised they still let us in church sometimes.  No specific stories to tell, as the statute of limitations may not have expired on some of the incidents, and some family secrets you just don't tell.
