Fighting Pistol class in upper Midwest (Iowa?)
« on: June 06, 2010, 08:10:09 PM »
My 70 yr. old dad is taking his IA CHL class in a couple of weeks. After he acquires the "ticket", I'd like to get him signed up for a fighting pistol class next year. He lives very near the IA, SD, NE border so if anyone knows of an instructor/class in that area it'd be appreciated.

I want to be very clear here, lest I give offense (my old man is the same age). What do you mean by "fighting" pistol? To me, at that age, its getting the gun drawn, hitting a taget at under ten yards and moving latterlly. Personally, I would PM Pincus about this. Expect about $150 per hour for one on one training. A class geared for 30 year olds is not going to help your dad. To me, getting the gun out, engaging the taget, and moving seems key. Also, if he has issues with weight or recoil or cocking a a pistol, now would be the time to address them. Just my .02.

True, 'fighting pistol' does sound like he'd be going out Rambo-style or be donning a molle. I guess the an other way of saying it is defensive pistol, though if you draw, I suppose you're in a fight. My usage was from the class that I took with Tactical Response called 'Flighting Pistol'.

We are going to go out next weekend and do some target skills with a .22 auto to get loosened up, then into some basic drills with the 9mm. The hope is to find some fairly local training classes with whom he can train with when I'm not around (as I live 12 hrs. drive time to the South).
