A FATHER and his six-year-old son have been killed when his wife's stepfather opened fire in a restaurant before turning the gun on himself.

The gunman, who was identified as Jimmy Schlager, 56, of Lancaster, rode a bicycle to the Del Taco restaurant restaurant in San Bernardino, California, before opening fire at his family, who were having lunch.

Both his stepdaughter, 29, and her five-year-old son sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital in critical condition, KABC-TV reported.

His stepdaughter's 33-year-old husband and his six-year-old son died from their wounds.

Afterwards Schlager shot himself in the head and was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

Witnesses told police the shooter went straight to their table and exchanged words briefly before he opened fire, The Press-Enterprise reported.

San Bernardino Police Lt Jarrod Burguan said they did not know what the motive for the shooting was.

"I'm under the impression that the relationship was not good," Lt Burguan said.

The two guns were believed to be semi-automatic weapons, according to KTLA News.

A sheriff's spokesman told Associated Press the suspect had an extensive criminal history dating back to 1972 for charges ranging from theft to assault with a deadly weapon. His most recent arrest was in 1999.

An employee of a recycling trailer near the Del Taco said he saw people run screaming out of the restaurant.

"I saw some people yelling and all of a sudden I heard boom, boom, boom, boom," Jorge Garcia told The Press-Enterprise.

"I saw two employees run out of the employee door and then I saw eight or 10 people run out of the restaurant and across the street," he said.

I doubt you ever plan on having to defend yourself most places. 

I would expect these folks knew there were "hard feelings" between them and the murderer and as soon as he started getting angry, my hand would have been on my weapon, and drawn if that could be done under cover.

The probably had more foreknowledge of the impending attack than they would have of a random shooting in the same place.
