CHICAGO (AP) - Mayor Richard Daley says a rash of shootings that has left 10 people dead and more than 60 wounded since Friday bolsters his argument that city needs its handgun ban.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue an opinion by month's end on whether the city's long-standing ban is constitutional.

City officials say if the high court rules against the city, they would look for ways to change gun restrictions so that the measures aren't unconstitutional.

During an appearance Tuesday at a South Side high school, the mayor also said the city will spend nearly $25 million in federal economic stimulus money on preventative programs for youth in high schools where there's been a lot of violence. The programs will provide teacher training and mentors.

TAB, your statement is correct as far as it goes.  It fails to take into account, however, that the inability of the honest citizen to defend himself against the dregs of society is one of the primary reasons that it IS a cesspool.
