Cool Service by the UPS Store
« on: June 28, 2010, 01:15:22 AM »
I am going to fly :P from Fl. to Mt. in a couple of weeks for a fishing/camping trip. No way was all my gear going to fit in my allowed lugage (Mt in july can range fron 85 to 35 and that's not including fishing and camping gear etc). I called The UPS Store in Livigston. They said they will hold a box, no matter what size, for up to 30 days for $1 a day. What? :o Screw checking luggage. Mail your stuff ahead. You get a tracking number, can confirm its arrival and know that you gear is waiting for you when you get there with zero hassel about hoping your bags aren't on their way to Hong Kong. ;)

Wow that's good to know. That could really come in handy.

I was talking with our UPS guy about this a couple weeks ago. He said that this is becoming such a popular option that UPS is even working with some hotels to deliver your luggage straight to your room. Or at the very least to the hotel where you are staying. All you have to do is make arrangements allowing the hotel to sign for it.

We had a guy with our company that came down twice a year to help me audit our hydraulic system controls and such. He always UPSed us his equipment, along with his personal luggage, a few days ahead of his flight. It was always ready and waiting when he got here. He carried a large laptop case with his laptop and a change of clothes in case there was a problem with the flight times.

With what some of these airlines are charging for luggage these days this could be a viable option. If enough people did this maybe the airlines would take another look at their policies.

I don't think that's going to happen.  Some of the airlines have links to FEDEX or UPS on their flight status pages so you can arrange to have your luggage shipped instead of paying the airlines' fees.

I agree....the airlines are failing.  There are too many of them all fighting for the same passengers.  They will charge what they can until they go under or merge with another company.  We may see an alternate energy to fuel automobiles but we may never replace kerosene based fuel for our airlines.

Which is something that I have never understood!!!!  JP-8 jet fuel is essentially kerosene. This is far less refined than even diesel. So with the lack of refinement, shouldn't this make it a less expensive fuel? Instead it is among the most expensive.  ??? Help me out here?

It's a bit of a quandary ain't it?

Note....as of April, the average cost of commercial aviation jet fuel is about $2.30/gallon.  I guess the question is whether it's the most expensive to produce or one of the highest taxed...

The economy of scale. If we could get cars to run on it, it would be $.75 a gallon. (maybe a better avenue for car companies to look into than hybrids). Still, people use billions of gallons of gas a year. JP-8, not so much. Thus you have to charge more per unit to cover production costs. At least thats my take on it.
