US Vice President Joe Biden called the manager of a frozen custard shop outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a "smartass" after the man asked him to lower taxes.
FOXNews.com said Mr Biden made the comment after the Kopp's Frozen Custard shop manager told him that his dessert would be on the house if he lowered taxes.
"What do we owe you?" Mr Biden is heard saying in footage captured by WISN-TV.
"Don’t worry, it's on us," the manager replied.

"Lower our taxes and we'll call it (the custard) even."
"Why don't you say something nice instead of being a smartass all the time," Mr Biden said a few minutes later.
Mr Biden had walked in to Mr Kopp's mistakenly asking for ice cream instead of custard.

The manager said later in an interview with WISN that he thought Mr Biden didn't seem happy initially about the taxes comment, but that the Vice President later whispered that he was just kidding.
It's not the first time the gaffe prone Mr Biden has put his foot in his mouth by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. In March at a ceremonial signing of President Obama's historic health care law reforms Mr Biden was overheard telling the President "this is a big f**ing deal".

Applause during the introduction drowned out the comment for those in the room, however, a number of news crews recording the event picked up the comment which was quickly replayed across the news and on the internet.

During the Democratic presidential primaries Mr Biden was forced to apologise after describing Mr Obama as "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate, and bright and clean, and a nice-looking guy."

In 2008 at a rally in Missouri Mr Biden told a wheelchair-bound politician to "Stand up, Chuck, let them see you".
