Another Huge WTF Moment!
« on: July 03, 2010, 05:25:53 AM »
Of course, Phil Ochs and Pete Seeger are well-known neo-Commies, so this is not surprising. Can anyone - except for FQ with his honed leftist edjumacation - actually say they have even heard of more than 2 or 3 of these? I consider myself reasonably well-versed in music, and I can only recall 5 of the 12.

Top Twelve Most Patriotic Songs Ever
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/02/opinion/main6641517.shtml?tag=cbsnewsLeadStoriesAreaMain;cbsnewsLeadStoriesHeadlines

(The Nation)   Peter Rothberg is the Associate Publisher for Special Projects at Nation
I've always thought that the best things about America can usually be found embodied in our national music. In fact, as Peter Drier and Richard Flacks observed in a 2002 Nation article, "Most Americans are unaware that much of our patriotic culture--including many of the leading icons and symbols of American identity--was created by artists and writers of decidedly left-wing and even socialist sympathies." <Path: Red is the color on purpose, not for emphasis>

That includes, most decidedly, our music. "A look at the songs sung at post-9/11 patriotic tribute events and that appear on the various patriotic compilation albums, or the clips incorporated into film shorts celebrating the 'American spirit,' reveals that the preponderance of these originated in the forgotten tradition of left-wing patriotism." <Path: There's the money quote! WTF? ? ? >

So, in honor of July 4th, here's my top twelve list of America's most patriotic songs (in random order), with accompanying videos. It's a highly subjective list which could go on and on, so please use the comments field below to cite your own favorites and we can have a happy argument about it.

Power and Glory, Phil Ochs
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do this to others and I require the same from them"

Not going to argue. Hell who am I kidding? Of course I'm going to argue. ;D You might note that the Pledge was written by Edward Bellamy, a Baptist Minister and a Socialist. Just sayin'. Discuss amongst yourselves. I will be ROFL.

PS "This Land Is Your Land" penned by Woodie Guthrie who's guitar had a sticker reading "This machine kills fascists"?. Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau ringing any bells? Maybe, just maybe the Right doesn't have a monopoly on patriotism? No, that's heretical. I'll probably get a fatwa declared on me. Cause that's what REAL Americans do. ::)

PS Path, If I misundestood the point of your post I apologize, just saying that folks of all political stripes love this country.

Ummmmm how bout a few songs that are actually patriotic...

God Bless America?
The Star Spangled Banner?
Washington Post (John Philip Sousa)?
Stars and Stripes (Sousa)
Battle Hymn of the Republic?
My Country Tis of Thee?
America the Beatiful?
When Johnny Comes Marching Home?
I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy?
Yankee Doodle?
Dixie (lets remember it was written by a slave that had just gained freedom)?
All of the hymns for each branch of the military?

Didnt see any of those on that idiot's list ::)
Just cause its a hippie protest song does not make it patriotic!

Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Country Music.

Well, lets see:
'Battle Hymn of the Republic' written by Julia Ward Howe. A feminist, peace activist and Abolitionist. Yep, a lefty! Clearly a commie. ::)
The "Star Spangled Banner" written by Francis Scott Key, a trial lawyer, and on a peace mission to the Brits. Commie!
"When Johnny Comes Marching Home"? Its a rewrite of an Irish anti-war song written by Patrick Gilmore. The original lyrics are as follows:
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athy
A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye
A doleful damsel I heard cry,
Johnny I hardly knew ye.
With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns
The enemy nearly slew ye
Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer
Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild
When my heart you so beguiled
Why did ye run from me and the child
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run
When you went for to carry a gun
Indeed your dancing days are done
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home
All from the island of Sulloon
So low in flesh, so high in bone
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg
Ye're an armless, boneless, chickenless egg
Ye'll have to put with a bowl out to beg
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again
But they never will take our sons again
No they never will take our sons again
Johnny I'm swearing to ye.
Yeah, there's right wing patriotism. ::)

" My Country Tis of Thee" was translated from a German Hymnal, a language the right wing succesfully sought to have banned during WWI.
Am I making my point Eric, Haz and Path, or do I need to go on? Because I can.

My point, Quaker is that if you are going to do a list of the most patriotic songs ever then put atleast some patriotic songs on the list.

Yeah, there's right wing patriotism. Roll Eyes

" My Country Tis of Thee" was translated from a German Hymnal, a language the right wing successfully sought to have banned during WWI.

Uh, wrong,......Woodrow Wilson, a huge Progressive, who was a dangerous POTUS, violated more civil rights, and had the largest manipulated propaganda machine that even the soon to come Nazi's, admired.

Check your Wilson admin facts again....

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

I hope he didn't get paid for that article ... but we all know he did  :'(  What a crock.

How many of you other old farts remember way back in the olden days when you would go to school, leave your hat at the door, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and then sing My Country Tis of Thee?
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

Just because he was a Dem doesn't mean he wasn't right wing. Re-segregating the civil service? The sedition act of 1918? Hell, "The Solid South" was solidly Dem because they hated Lincoln. After Truman in '48 and Strom and the Dixiecrats, and Johnson in in '64, they started voting GOP after Nixon and Reagan's "Southern Strategy'. Don't even try to pull this crap on a Southern boy because I know how my grandparents voted and why. :P
