A SPATE of shootings over the past 24 hours in New South Wales has lead to calls for both federal leaders to back national uniform gun laws.

NSW Greens’ MP, Lee Rhiannon, says it is time for tighter gun control laws, with a ban on semi-automatic pistols, following four separate shooting incidents.

“The events underline the need for law reform in this area,” she says in a statement.

“Handguns are the most concealable firearm, which is why they are the weapon of choice in violent robberies.”

About 6:25pm yesterday (Monday), a 27-year-old man was shot several times at Lakemba, in Sydney’s southwest.

Earlier in the day, at least two shots were fired at a home and vehicle in Cessnock in the Hunter Valley.

Three people in the house – two adults and a teenager – were unhurt.

About four hours later, a woman and her four young children escaped injury when shots were fired at their home in inner-city Sydney.

A robber was then shot and killed and an innocent bystander wounded during an attempt to steal cash from an armoured security van outside an RSL club on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Ms Rhiannon says the shoot-out happened in Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s electorate of Warringah.

“Mr Abbott’s constituents were put at risk . . . and he should follow his mentor Mr Howard and back tighter gun control laws,” she says.

“Illegal firearms used by criminals start off life as legal weapons and that is why gun control laws need to be tightened.

“Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and Mr Abbott should call for this issue to be taken up . . . as a matter of priority. Lives are at stake.”

Ms Rhiannon points to the work former Prime Minister John Howard had done in the wake of the 1996 Port Arthur gun massacre.

“John Howard had the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and won support for a national uniform ban on semi-automatic long arms,” she says.

“The work started 14 years ago by Mr Howard now needs to be completed.”

I used to absolutely love Oz.  Went there a couple of times on business and stayed over for the pure pleasure of the place.  Great people.  Great beer.  Great attitudes.  Fantastic scenery.  Then, the people lost their collective mind and voted for brain-damaged idiots to lead them.  And the place became a "don't need MY tourist dollars" place for me.  Still, I have some awesome memories.  It's a shame the young Oz residents won't be able to say the same thing. :'(

Even at a ball game, when someone talks during the anthem or doesn’t take off his hat, it pisses me off. I’m not one to be quiet about it, either.”  Chris Kyle

Yup its a shame we have #%#ing idiots as politicians and even worse we have bigger $##%ing idiots that are supposedly on the shooters side such as the SSAA. Back when it counted they backdoored shooters and done deals with the government so their "sanctified" official disciplines would go unimpeded, the shotgunners did the same, the full bore / rifle shooters also all trying to protect their own little patch and giveing up every one else. 7 years later they took some more because of the deals done in 96 there was nothing in place to stop them. Had they grown a set of balls in the beginning and stood together and faught the changes it may never have occurred. But these small minded asswipes couldnt see the bigger picture for the cash they saw coming there way, after all if your the largest organisation and you are the only ones who have sanctified disciplines who do people have to join to compete?
Am I still shitty hell yeah, will they take any more off me, not on your $##*ing nelly. If push comes to shove again you will see me on the news even in your country.

Rhiannon  needs to STFU

she has just resigned ( i think )  from the NSW Parlament to contest the Federal election so she can sit next to her bum buddy Bob Brown ( the are as bad as each other)
the Greens are the real worry for us  as they have NFI and will caus us lots of issues. they are the biggest hypocritical bunch out there

she opens her Pie hole  every time something happens !!!

Lee Rhiannon wants to ban handguns, however most handgun crime is associated with drug-dealing gangs. If Ms Rhainnon had taught her son not to deal drugs, there might well be less handgun deaths on our streets.

( sorry about that )

she wants hand guns banned after an "ARMED CRIMINAL" was shot dead by a security guard that was defending his and his partners lives while they were in the process of doing a $4Mill transfer from a RSL club.(good on them )

she and the Greens always come out with this crap after something happens, this is the same when a shooting happens over seas they say the same BS every time..

FTA:

"in the wake of the 1996 Port Arthur gun massacre."

Those poor defenseless guns!! If only they would have had a way to defend themselves!!!

I apologize for not having any knowledge of the '96 event, but the article makes it sound like it was the guns that were slaughtered.

The Port Arthur massacre of 28 April 1996  (Tasmania)

35 people were killed and 21 wounded
by Martin Bryant

it was about 2 weeks after that John "I Hate Guns" Howard  told the states that Aust was banning guns

that was when we got bent over

Just noticed the shemale bitch still wears her testicles as earings and her scrotum as a face.

Does that mean you didn't vote for her ?  ;D
