That was not relevant, then or now, they were promoting the same policies, and being used by, those who were, or sympathized with, traitors, Like the later Rosenberg's, so they got painted with the same brush.

There's a big difference. Working in the service of a foriegn power to weaken us is treason. Pushing for a different, but still very much home grown agenda is just politics. Haywood, Debs and Day wanted modern Sweden, not the USSR. Not my cup of tea, but hardly treason either.

FQ, this wasn't handled by political science majors, it was handled by 30 something Pinkerton's , and "strike breakers" who were nothing more than Brawlers.
There no fine distinction between "socialists" and "Communists", If they were striking they all got clubbed the same, jailed the same (and clubbed some more just for good measure ).

Which is exactly my problem. You want to take foriegn money? Go to jail. Want to be  an indepent patriotic dissident (of whatever stripe)? That's your right. Hell Tom, you might want to be careful about what you defend, lest those thirty Pinkerton brawlers, (I belive they're going by "The company formerly known as Blackwater" these days), shows up at your house. "Mr. Prime Minister of a foriegn country". They might even bring rope.

I'm not commenting on the right or wrong of it, simply the mind set of the times. Had you been raised in that culture, it might have been you who bombed Jessie James Mother, You can not judge the decisions of the past by the ideas of today.
You of all people should have jumped on that.
