Garand4Life is giving away a Motorola Droid
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:24:30 PM »
Hey Guys,
Please take a minute to check out my latest blog post. I am asking for help from anyone willing to start a high school 3-Gun team. And at this point we have already acquired via donation a Mossberg 590A1 and a used Glock 17. I am asking my YouTube audience, if they be willing, to donate for the purchase of a carbine. Currently a gun shop I frequent is offering to sell me a SR-556 for about $1000. It helps to know the owner. I've been wanting to to get an AR and now I have the opportunity to put it to a good use teaching a 5 person team of High Schoolers to shoot. I am putting up what money I can to augment the donations. My goal is $1500 to purchase the AR, ammo for the 3 guns, 9mm, 12 gauge, and .223. Plus targets, optic, and to pay for the rental of the range twice a month. A lot of this is already in motion. But I can not afford to fund this solely on my own. If you would like to donate, I am only asking for a dollar or 2 from each contributor. If you would like to donate more great. If you read the whole article you'll see that we are making a team picture with the names of all the donors (either real name or online handle) and putting up my Motorola Droid in a random drawing for the donors. So a $500 dollar smart phone for Verizon and all it takes is a donation of a few dollars. I am running this through PayPal, which might create some concern for some some of you. If that is the case and you would still like to donate you can message me and we will find an alternate means for you.
My end game goal it so create at least 3 teams to compete against each other during the fall and spring of the school year to coincide with the other outdoor sports like football and track.

Great effort and I will contribute. But, and here I'm just saying. If you want this to take off, might you not be better off with single shot 22s? Its, cheaper, safer and helps the image issue that might make some schools leery.
SS .22 LR is what the BSA uses so there is already an established youth program to model from.
Likewise it might make parets more supportive.
Finally it will sure trim the ammo bill and the cost of rifles.
You'll still teach basic marksmanship and hopefully help re-introduce youth shooting as a safe wholesome pass time.

On the other hand, three gun is much cooler. ;D
Good luck either way and keep us posted.

what about Ruger Rimfire Challange type of match? It also would keep costs down and allow pistol and rifle skills to be learned. Gonna send in a few bucks next paycheck anyway. Good luck!

I thought about going rimfire. The only reason I want to go this route is due to the fact most of the kids currently involved have some shooting experience. Plus I don't want to do what has already been done. I see it very likely we will use .22 single shots for something do the road to expand but this provides a level of physical activity that would require some them to get out and run and improve their physical condition. I love the idea of doing a Ruger Rimfire style event. But I want to do it as an addition that will promote family involvement. I could see having a weekend for families that the team could demonstrate their skills then be able to turn around and bring the family into a rimfire shoot to help promote what we are doing. I just don't like following the established trail when I see something that hasn't been done. I'm sure someone somewhere has attempted this but I WILL see it through. I appreciate the support you'll have shown through the board and email and facebook. I really think this would promote something more than just hunting and plinking. This takes kids who sit behind an xbox for 6 hours a day and gets them into a high energy, tuff, and challenging sport and promotes gun ownership and safety in a way that is not always considered by the "establishment" as a worthwhile venture.
We are always talking about making things like black rifles and action shooting a more mainstream part of the gun culture, why not take advantage of the interest created by media and expose younger audiences to the reality of firearms and not the unrealistic fantasy created by hollywood and video game makers?

G4L You have put to words what I have been thinking about since I got out of Shooting Sports School with the Boy Scouts. I have talked a little with the local Venture (boy scout program fot 14 - 21 boys and girls) crew that does Bulls Eye competition about doing the rimfire challenge to keep the kids more interested.

Just a suggestion you might talk with your local Boy Scout Council for the following reasons
1. etablished organization
2. if you do the program as a Venture Crew you have BSA insurance
3. they could help out on the finances.

I'll see what I can do on a donation

any questions pm
