Took Mom Shooting today
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:04:34 PM »
I am visiting my mother in Vero Beach Florida for a couple of days. While I was in Iraq She and her husband took an NRA safty course and purchased a firearm for home defense. While talking to her I found out that she has not shot the pistol since they purchased it. So I took her to the Indian River County Public Shooting Range. Boy am I envious what a nice facility very well run and super clean. Range master on the pistol range was great and is a former Marine Vietnam Vet. Mom was only able to shoot for a little more than an hour due to physical limitations. At first she was very nervous due to lack of being familiar with the pistol. So I fired ten rounds my self to test the pistol first, for me it hit a little low and to the left. It will not properly feed the last round so I will chaulk tha up to the new magazines not being broke in yet. After some coaching from me and some changes in her grip i was able to get her on target and then finally on paper for the last ten rounds. It was a good time for her and I now I have to convince my sister to take her at least once a month to keep her familiar and on target.

First off thanks for serving.

Second, glad you got your mom out to the range.  I'm sure you've already told her if she's going to own for home defense she needs to be comfortable with the pistol

Dittos!

And "SUPER" for taking your mom out.   Not only was is good mom/son time, but had a practical side.   Maybe she'll want to go more often and talk some of her friends into joining her.

Thanks for your service, and I'm glad you got to take mom out. I cherish the memories of things I did with my mom in later years.
