Dry firing with empty shells

Is it ok to use fired, empty shells for dry firing instead of "snap caps"?  Does the "dent" from the firing pin in the primer caed by the first shooting risk damage to the firing pin?

I figure if it is ok, I'd use the empty shell 4 or 5 times before replacing it with another empty shell.

It works fine, just don't confuse empty with loaded.

Safety is #1 - Because of the possibility of mix up don't use spent cases!

If you feel the need to use snap caps purchase snap caps.  They don't cost that much, and usually come in a color and style that makes it impossible to mix up with live ammunition.

Snap caps are cheap insurance!

PS:  I will add that when I am doing reloading practice I use fired cases, eject them and reload with suitably marked dummy rounds made up with fired cases and bullets.  Haven't tried filling primer pockets with silicone but am told that works also.

Made my own 'snap-caps'. Took an empty casing and punched out the primer and sized on a reloader. Then I pulled the eraser out of a pencil and glued it into the primer pocket and cut it off flush with the head.
