Model 597 Yellow Jacket, Remington's Target Plinker

Remington fans check it out. I've heard great things about this new Remington .22 LR. Its a spin off of their regular ("accurate" I know because I have one) model 597 .22 Long Rifle. All the intel I have seen on it, says it is very accurate. Looks, like I'm gonna have to put in some more overtime.

That is one ugly gun. Altho I am not one of these blue steel and walnut old farts sometimes "modern" is too much even for me!

Looks like the same stock as the 10/22 that Rastus won. butt ugly colors though,the blue was much nicer.

I have always heard that the mag is the problem with this gun

Anyone know first hand?

About the mag:

After the gun had been out a few years I purchased one because it is made in KY, which is where I live (good enuff reason to buy a new gun, right?). The mag absolutely, positively failed to feed. I called up Remington customer service and was told a redesign had been done on the mag. The CS rep sent me a new mag which arrived promptly. The new mag is reliable IF I load only eight rounds instead of ten. I decided to live with that. I like the gun and it may be the mag issue has been solved and I just got a lemon immediately after the redesign. I haven't purchased a spare yet to test that theory.

****Update****  The newest generation of magazines work perfectly for the Remington 597. Here a link that shows pictures. Also, Remington is now starting to make 30rd. factory mags for the 597. Eagle something or nother.. also makes a 30rd mag for the 597.

As an engineer, I love it! I can almost see all of the R&D that went into this gun. True, it does not harken back to the days of lore. I to like a gun that brings back childhood comforts of blue steel and walnut stocks. Something about an old gun like that makes me imagine cold winter days and the smell of Outers nitro solvent; however, times they are a changen. If we are going to keep our kids shooting, that market demands fast paced race gun looks, sexy curves, and light wieght plastics. When I was young, Brook Shields was hot, but by my son's standards, she would be "ok" at best.
I like where the market is heading. There will always be blue steel and walnut for us old farts. Let the kids have some fun.
