Been looking for one to play with.  They're not available in MA so I've gotta wait till next week and visit my old gun shop in CT.  It's on the short list but still a bit heavy.

I do too, they point nicely, sights come up naturally for me.  They must have a grip angle close to the 1911.  Any thoughts and a range report would be great!

My H&K P2000 Sub-compact in 9mm is a great pistol.  Yes, it is pricey but you get what you pay for (as long as customer service is not an issue from what I have heard.)  3" barrel but extremely accurate and no mechanical issues and I have about 2,000 rounds through her.  She is a little wide making it less than ideal for summer carry, but worth a look to see if it is a nice fit for you.

There's a pretty thorough review of the SR9s in this month's American Rifleman. Usually I don't trust those articles as they seem to just be a suck up to the "sponsor of the month", but having famously owned an SR9, I thought it was actually a good article. The gun handles well and the ergonomics are awesome unless you have grizzly paws for hands. My issue was the post-recall trigger, which I couldn't charactarize any more civilly than to call it crap.

TO HIS CREDIT, author Wiley Clapp mentions at the end of the article that the trigger is "...gritty and has some movement" "...not an easy system to use for great accuracy..." and for "...self defense, it's acceptable." Acceptable? The article lists the trigger pull at ten pounds. 10.
Think about that for a second.

I bring this up for a few reasons:
1) You need to know about the trigger. If you want to shoot for accuracy you've got a chore ahead of you. Just for pulling out of your pocket and letting go point blank, you're good to go. Don't get me wrong...other than the trigger that I could just never stop pulling shots with, I think the gun is awesome. It feels great, it's reliable, looks good, all that. AND it's one of the few pistols that felt good to me and my wife also liked when she shot it.


2) Ruger has been innovating like crazy in the pistol market, and you've got to give them credit for going out on a limb. I just can't see why they would go so far to create a really wonderful pistol but leave it with a trigger that excludes a large segment of buyers. Not everyone has the money for, the personal skills, or access to a smith so they can work the trigger. It's not perfect, so CLOSE, but no banana.

3) I've got to give a shout out to Wiley Clapp for writing an article that points out the shortcomings of the pistol in a magazine that often is just a mouthpiece for the advertisers. Good job dude.

I'm looking forward to DaverZ's report. Some people don't mind the trigger, and like I said, if you're looking simply for self defense this gun will sit right in your hand EVERY time you pull it out of your pocket. [color]

Thanks Jay, I knew you'd chime in.  I read the article this morning myself and I agree, they gave the gun a decent appraisal as opposed to a normal "don't piss off a sponsor" type.

I missed the bit about the weight of the trigger though, 10 pounds is pretty stout but was probably done to get it to comply with CA and MA requirements for DAO guns.  I've read somewhere that they can be lessened and I'm hoping that MB will give me some info on that.  I've PM'd him with some questions.  My snubby is down around 10 since I did a spring replacement but it's consistent and crisp.

I have plenty of time, not a bunch of money and a vast inventory to choose from so I will be taking all advice and probably spend a whole day at Cabelas in Hartford feeling them all up before I buy.  They have the largest inventory of firearms outside of Kittery Trading Post in downeast Maine.

I have an EAA Witness Compact in .40, great grip, can be carried cocked & locked, or have DA option.

No plastic frame. Slightly heavier.

The CZ 75 or other CZ variants would also be great choice. The Kel-Tec PF-9 very lightweight and easily carried.

Have you looked at any of the new Taurus lines? Supposedly, the new compact line of 9mm's are getting good reviews.

Oh- also, there is some after market trigger kit for the SR9 that was on a previous thread here, but I know nothing about it.
