S&W Mod. 22A-1

Hey guys....and gal or two,
I was in the gun shop Fri., and I picked up two new toys. I baught a S&W mod. 22A-1 and a Mossberg 500A Field with a 28'' accu-chock bbl. It is the walnut version with the ported vent rib tube. I know what the 12 ga. will do because I have a mess of them. I want to ask if any of you have had a run in with the Smith. I put a red dot scope on it today, and I plan to shoot about 200 rounds through it in the morning. It looks and feels like a great gun. Tell me your stories if you have one.

I have had one for almost three years.  I use it for plinkin, pest control, bullseye (50' NRA) and all around fun shooting.  Thousands of rounds does not even begin to say how much I have shot this one (at least 12K maybe 15K or slightly over???). 

My rifles and USPSA guns get cleaned every time they are used (almost), the shotguns get cleaned after every hunting venture, but this thing ... well ...  It is just like the Energizer Bunny - It keeps going and going and going.

It has shot every brand I've run through it.  It has never failed to fire a Federal Gold Match, has an occasional misfire on Winchester Wildcat, never had a problem with cheap bulk Federal or American Eagle, but Remington Thunderbolts will give the most trouble (I have started watching lot numbers and if I have trouble with one I will have more with that lot, and then the next lot may go fine).

I ended up with a really good red dot on mine (because it was laying on the bench looking for a mate). 

I have shot a 430 (out of possible 600) in bullseye with mine, but I'm not a very good shot.  Another guy (one of the top in our club) picked it up and cranked off a target comparable to his Ruger Mark III Target with a real tight group.  Not bad for half the price of a Ruger.

The only item I would change if I could is the magazine release.  I have dropped a magazine twice because my fat fingers can get pressure on the front of the grip where the button is recessed.  The barrel removal for cleaning is easy, and even though I thought that little white plastic piece was cheesy it has stood up fine so far.

Fit and comfort of a gun is very personal, but if it fits you like it does me I'm sure you will have many years of fun with it.

The barrel removal for cleaning is easy, and even though I thought that little white plastic piece was cheesy it has stood up fine so far.

My cheesy plastic plastic piece is severely deformed but I haven't replaced it yet with one of the two spares provided. Gun still works. My gun has a spongey trigger but is accurate. I have toyed with the idea of a red dot for it.

The Browning Buckmark is still my favorite 22 auto pistol but the S&W rates as a good gun and is preferable to my overpriced, less accuarate Sig Trailside.

Well yall, this thing ran great this morning. I had one problem out of 300 rounds. I love the red dot on it. 25 foot 5 round groups are at 1/4 in. This is not free hand. I am not that good. I had a good rest. Freehand isn;t bad at all though. I see what you ment by the clip release. I dropped a clip because I have a fat finger as well. IT'S A KEEPER. I am going to try some pics here.

I know a guy that has one and he hits bullseyes all the time. He loves it. I've not got to shoot it, but I've seen he blink the crap out of his targets. They must be pretty good. I even saw him out shoot a Ruger mk-ii guy in a "friendly competion."

I never new the gun existed until a few months ago. Rented one for my daughter and I fell in love with it's big gun feel and accuracy.  So I had to buy one.  I've got 600 rnds thru it. It seems to like CCI minimags.  I gave it a good cleaning when I first got it, but now I just run a boresnake thru and brush the breach area.  With the price of ammo going up, they are a wise investment. I figure I shoot about 1/2 the larger caliber ammo I used to.  I warm up with the 22A and then put 50 rnds or so out of my centerfires.

I think you're right about the minimags. I shot some Rem.s and that was not the best of the day. I try to stick to CCI's in all my .22 guns. My Ruger 10/22s love them.
