Opening Day
« on: August 31, 2010, 02:43:28 PM »
Its opening day of dove season tomorrow September first.  Who's going other than yours truly?  Just bought my license and two hundred fifty rounds for my father and myself.

If your going, shoot strait and stay safe.

Just for the record, I hate you.
FQ13 who remembers this sweet little type II WMA outside of Austin with a gravel pit, and a stock tank in South Texas almost hidden by mesquite so the birds were on you at about fifty feet before you knew they were there, and,......Did I mention I hate you? ;D

The best kind of hate though right, winkyface?  I'll make sure to knock a couple out for ya.  Then cook 'em up stuff with jalapeno, pepper jack, and wrapped in bacon, on the smoker.  Damn, I hate me too now!!!

Doves?   Oh yeah those nuisance birds that scatter feed from the bird feeder.   Yeah, I'll step out back with the air rifle tomorrow and knock off a couple for supper.   No challenge.

Will work for ammo

They are still plenty big, its just those guys/gals in texas can't shoot.

the limit in CA is 10 doves,( morning and white wing, no limit on ring necks) I normally get my limit on about the 12 or 13 shot.

Yeah, but in Texas we don't shoot them on the ground TAB. 8) Seriously, a South Texas white wing is hauling ass. For a good dove shoot, you need three things.
1: an attractor, such as a gravel pit, stock tank or harvested field
2; enough, but not too many, shooters to keep them moving but not scare them off
3: doves, and lots of them.
Getting those three things, in the right proportions, is a the tricky part. Doubly so on public land. In Texas, at least in the '90s, it was doable with a little planning. As far as 10 birds with 13 shots? Due respect, but if you bag a dozen hard flying white wing doves with more than a few shells left in your box of 25, you are a better man than I am Gungadin, and I am no slouch. ;)
FQ13 who fondly remembers thinking that buying 5 cases of ammo for practice in August, and another mixed five for bird season (dove, quail, ducks and geese stretching from September to January) was being conservative. ;D Sigh. God bless Texas, where I could and did hunt every spare hour I could beg, borrow or steal for five months straight. Gee, wonder why I never managed to bag a wife. Oh yeah, fishing season. ;D
