Hunting for bargains
Holiday runs from Friday-Sunday

Louisiana residents will enjoy a three-day sales tax-free holiday on various sporting goods beginning Friday.

The Louisiana Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday — passed by the state legislature in 2009 — provides an exemption from state and local sales and use taxes on individuals’ purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies on the first Friday through Sunday of each September.

Shoppers can expect to save about 8.5 percent on hunting attire and firearms.

A few other items that qualify for the exemption include tree stands, decoys, hunting knives, all-terrain vehicles and vessels intended for hunting. Unlike the annual state sales tax holiday in August, there is no price limit on the exemptions.

True Value Hardware and Sporting Goods owner and Lincoln Parish Police Juror Jody Backus said the tax holiday was started to recognize second amendment rights and to promote outdoor activities.

“Wildlife and fisheries is a big revenue source for the state with hunting and fishing licenses,” Backus said. “It’s also a form of entertainment for states (to market) to draw tourism. This is a sportsman state.”

Backus said last year marked the first Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, and it vastly increased business in his store.

“It turned out wonderful for us,” said Backus, who is getting extra staff to work in anticipation of a crowd this weekend. “We just saw a huge increase in foot traffic and sales. It was everybody. You see grandkids taking kids out, and the women’s trade is starting to pick up. We have started selling more women’s bows and hunting attire.”

McKinney Honda owner Richie McKinney is also bracing for a big weekend, with people crowding in to purchase firearms, ATVs and hunting apparel. He is scheduling extra staff to work and plans to have extended hours. Although sales have been down somewhat since the national economy went into a recession, McKinney is looking for sales to pick back up.
“We look for this to be a real big weekend,” he said. “We expect to do a month’s worth of business in this one weekend.”

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Hell, if they are smart enough to tag a 15% off sale on top of that (the tax holiday costing them nothing), I'd sure as hell be in his store. I might just buy ammo, but I'd but a lot of it. Hell, who am I kidding, I'd walk out with something I just then discovered I  "needed". ;D
