CRPA AND CALIFORNIA LAW ENFORCEMENT FILE AMICUS BRIEFS IN SUPREME COURT SECOND AMENDMENT CASE
Release Date: February 11, 2008

Contact: Chuck Michel, Legal Counsel (562) 216-4444

Today the California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) joined with forty other state rifle and pistol associations from across the country in filing a powerful and significant "friend of the court" amicus curiae brief in the case of Washington, DC vs. Heller in the United States Supreme Court. The brief supports the Second Amendment protection of an individual right to keep and bear arms.

Also today, a companion amicus brief in support of the Second Amendment was filed by twenty nine California District Attorneys, the San Francisco Veteran Police Officers Association, the Long Beach Police Officers Association, and other law enforcement groups from across the country. CRPA's attorneys assisted in writing the brief and in requesting that those district attorneys and law enforcement associations sign on.

The briefs were filed as part of a campaign in which amicus briefs covering various issues had to be filed by today. On Friday, Vice President Dick Cheney joined a bi-partisan majority of 55 senators and 250 representatives in filing a pro Second Amendment brief in the case. This is the largest number of co-signers on a congressional amicus brief in American history!

"CRPA's brief has particular relevance and significance for state associations," said civil rights attorney Chuck Michel. "The brief explains the role of state associations cooperating with the federal government and civilian marksmanship programs to ensure a level of firearm proficiency and readiness among the citizenry."

The law enforcement brief emphasizes the need for civilians to be prepared to defend themselves when the police cannot get there on time, and documents the level of defensive gun uses by citizens protecting themselves and their families in their homes.

"Police do a great job. But when seconds count, police are only minutes away." Michel said.

The CRPA brief is posted at www.crpa.org.The law enforcement brief is posted at www.i2i.org.All of the briefs and filings in the case are posted at www.dcguncase.com.
