That is where we really need to come into play, find people of good with the right principles to fight them in the primary.  The other solution one that I believe would really be a game changer is to repeal the 17th Amendment.  Our founders did not intend that senators be elected by the people; they were to be appointed by the states to insure that each state had an equal seat at the table. If the senator was not looking out for the best interest of the state they were simply fired and replaced. When you take in to account the power of the senate, and think about what it would be like if Wilson never got the 17th Amendment, I believe we would not have half the problems we do.  But repealing the 17th Amendment in today’s world would be a hard task, but would be the right thing to do.
I am torn on this issue. On the one hand, I agree. I detest populism. I cannot stand ballot initiatives, and the idea of electing judges seems absurd. You might as well let people phone in their votes on a case like in American Idol. That said, the problem is the fact that political parties have become the main arbiters of power. Let the legislatures choose Senators, and you will get subservient party hacks who will define state and national interests as the party leaders in Trenton or Austin or Salt Lake see them. One would hope the majority of voters would provide an incentive to take a broader (eg RINO or Blue Dog) view. The Senate is supposed to be moderate. Its why they have staggered elections so they aren't swept up in the passions of a particular moment. I think that in theory, the 17th was a mistake. In practice, it seems the lesser of two evils.

Never, ever forget, those guys were nothing but politicians and lawyers.
The Constitution is a politically expedient, imperfect, compromise  document that dodged the 2 major issues of the day,
Not one of them was man enough to 6take a stand against slavery or to suggest equal rights for women.

Those who continue to rely on an obviously flawed election system and the whims of the average voter will get what they deserve.
Probably 8 years of BO

Well, they had to start somewhere....and it was a tad better than what they had before 1776....IMHO.   :-\

Kind of like a teenage boy's first experience with alcohol and women......can't expect top quality the first time out.   ;D

It has morphed into an abomination of what it was originally intended to be, though....also JMHO.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
