Ways to carry a back up gun?
« on: September 25, 2010, 03:12:43 PM »
I'm thinking about starting to carry a Kel-Tec (Shut up! Mine works! ;D) concealed on the weak side as a BUG. What are good options for it other than the left pocket? Only way I've ever carried it is in the right pocket.  If I decide to carry in the weak pocket, I'll have to carry my wallet and flashlight somewhere else. So I want to think about other ways that might work better. Traditional IWB and OWB would be hard while wearing a tucked in shirt, so what are other ideas?

I don't see the need for weak side carry. It would be my first instinct, but why? If you need a BUg, by definition your main weapon has failed or is empty. So drop it and pull the bug. That said, I don't see why moving your wallet etc. to the right side is a big deal. If you're not comfortable with the weak hand though, just remember that unless you are going to be Two Gun Pete, you're going to be holstering/dropping your primary anyway.
Just my .02. although there is always this option............... 8)

My primary is in the right pocket, so I can't reach it with the weak hand. Also that's why the wallet won't fit there.

Ahh, I see. Well, there are deep conceal crotch holsters that apparently work with a tucked in shirt. I looked at them, just never pulled the trigger. Some folks seem to love them. Failing that, with a tucked in shirt its either ankle or wear a jacket, which opens up all sorts of options.

The Kel Tec is lite enough you can just drop it in your sock.
But, it's also small enough that those deep concealment holsters should be doable.

Leave the bug at home and just date Ziva!  Nothing better than an anti terrorist trained Mussad agent with an attitude..

I don't know why I still watch the show but it's captured me since it first aired.   ;)

Put the bug where you need it and practice till it's location is ingrained into your response scenario.

Walter, I know your close to my area, Hot in the summer, pretty mild winters that are short. Several ways, 1st, don't carry a wallet, I use a small zip thing to carry identity and credit cards or debit cards with my medical insurance, in my right front pocket, wallets are literally a pain in the ass, and not good for your body, now, where to carry Bug, either back pocket, which again is a pain in the ass, or belly band holster, this is a fave of mine, but worn up high, across the chest, across your nipples, and the pistol is tucked under your weak armpit, depending on what type shirt you wear, you can reach through a short sleeve shirt and draw, you can even be talking to someone, and have your hand on the grip, to rip out at a moments notice, and nobody would be the wiser, it conceals very well. I carry 1 pistol, Right front pocket, but in my circumstance, I have several weapons available, in my vehicle and tool box, within 100'.

Another thing to consider with a pocket carried BUG (or primary for that matter) is being able to call on it when seated in a vehicle.
If pocket carry is the mode chosen, a wise move is a dedicated, easily reachable, vehicle gun.
