Tiger Island venue "inappropriate"
Gun firm offered alternative site
Dreamworld refuses to apologise
DREAMWORLD won't host a Christmas party for a gun company on its Tiger Island because the firm's website shows photos of exotic animals being killed for sport.
The Gold Coast theme park is refusing to back down after angry correspondence from Nioa, one of Australia's largest firearm and ammunition suppliers.
Dreamworld chief executive Noel Dempsey said Nioa had been offered an alternative site for its party, after it was decided Tiger Island was inappropriate.
"Tiger Island was developed to inspire guests and the intention is to activate a conservation message to support the survival and longevity of these species," Mr Dempsey said.
He said Dreamworld had its own conservation fund and helped finance a number of non-profit wildlife originations.
"These financial donations are enthusiastically contributed by Dreamworld and guests who trust the conservation ethic of Dreamworld," he said.

"We believe that these guests, along with our partner organisations, would consider it inappropriate to grant the use of our Tiger Island facility to an association whose website shows exotic animals being killed in their natural habitat for sport and trophy."
The Nioa website gallery includes photos of hunters with animals they've shot, including leopards, giraffes, elephants and zebra. It also features feral and introduced species which have been killed in Australia.
In a letter to Dreamworld demanding an apology, managing director Robert Nioa said the refusal was naive and offensive to himself, his staff and their family members, wildlife lovers and "those at the informed end of the wildlife management debate".
"Organisations throughout the globe ... backed by significant volumes of research, have applauded the work of hunters who have facilitated through the provision of funds to African governments the employment of park rangers to prevent poaching and manage breeding programs in wildlife sanctuaries," says the letter, obtained by AAP.
Mr Nioa told Dreamworld its position was "almost comical" given its "direct involvement in the caging and exploitation of wild animals for entertainment".
Additional comment was being sought from Nioa.
Dreamworld has refused to apologise but has told Mr Nioa the offer of an alternative site remains open.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

Hunters have proven to be the greatest conservationists, both currently and historically.  Sure, tree huggers may wave their signs and chain themselves to trees, attaining minimal results and maximum exposure.  Hunters, however, do the REAL work and donate REAL money to protecting animals and their habitats.  I'm modifying a Doc Holiday line here, but their hypocracy knows no bounds.

Phil, you know I have great affection for Oz and for many of your country's wonderful residents.  So, what I am about to say is not meant to cause either hurt or offense:  but, it's your fault that this happened.
You and your fellow Aussies let the camel get his nose under the tent when you consented to gun regulation.
Which led to gun registration.
And that resulted in gun confiscation.
And that led to this sort of idiocy.

Maybe it's time for you to take your country back.

I know, who am I to preach when the USA has apparently lost its way?  You're right.  But, I think (and pray) that we're going to start back on the road to recovery in November.

I have the same hopes (and prayers) for the wonderful land of Oz.
“I’ve lived the literal meaning of the ‘land of the free’ and ‘home of the brave.’ It’s not corny for me. I feel it in my heart. I feel it in my chest. Even at a ball game, when someone talks during the anthem or doesn’t take off his hat, it pisses me off. I’m not one to be quiet about it, either.”  Chris Kyle

To whom it may concern
With regards to Mr Nioa’s enquiry to hold an event on our premises, Dreamworld has expressed that we are more than happy to accommodate his request in any location at both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World with the exclusion of Tiger Island and the Australian Wildlife Experience. Dreamworld acknowledges that the Australian Firearm industry is a legal and respected industry that is notably undertaking many works to ensure the safety of Australian citizens of which we are supportive.
We respect the committed work of the firearm industry and also respect the work of conservation organisations with which we partner, and of the dedicated staff that work within our wildlife departments. For more than 25 years, Dreamworld has been operating a wildlife facility that educates our guests on the plight of Australian native species and actively works both within Australia and internationally, to deliver a conservation message for the protection of endangered animals. We have established strong alliances across a wide range of wildlife organisations and it is important for us to protect this relationship and ensure we fulfil our common objectives to promote conservation through education and ongoing support of the species we manage.
Tiger Island was developed to inspire guests and the intention is to activate a conservation message to support the survival and longevity of these species. This includes the formation of our own Dreamworld Conservation Fund.
In addition, Dreamworld also provides support and funding to ensure the survival of endangered species and partners with Australian non-profit organisations such as the Australian Koala Foundation and Save the Bilby Fund. These financial donations are enthusiastically contributed to by Dreamworld and guests who trust the conservation ethic of Dreamworld. We believe that these guests, along with our partner organisations, would consider it inappropriate to grant the use of our Tiger Island facility to an association whose website shows exotic animals being killed in their natural habitat for sport and trophy. It is for this reason that we have declined to host Mr Nioa’s event at Tiger Island and the offer to host this event in another area of our park remains open.
Once again, I would like to reinforce that Dreamworld supports the legal ownership and use of fire arms within Australia and as previously offered, we would be delighted to host Mr Nioa’s event in any other location within Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.
We look forward to being able to reach a conclusion on this matter and hopefully all concerned can respect our position.
Kind regards

Noel Dempsey
Chief Executive Officer
Dreamworld & WhiteWater World
