Charter Arms Undercover 38 +p
« on: October 06, 2010, 09:29:32 PM »
Just ordered a Charter Arms undercover 38 +p hammerless. Hopefully it will be here before saturday, that is the last qualification shoot for the year that our department has schedualed. We can carry any semi-auto after we pass, but you must shoot the same revolver that you are going to carry(nobody seems to know why). If it's not here hopefully I can talk our RO into going out later, I know he has done it in the past. I'll give a range report when I get a chance.

Guy I work with bought one for his wife not to long ago, They aren't "gun people" but they are happy with it.

I have one - not hammerless. It's everything that it needs to be. The first cylinder was sticky when trying to eject the empties and then it was smooth as can be.

Considering that Charter's intent was to build a "cheap" pistol that most people could afford I have never heard any one bad mouth them.
The finish may not be up to the old time S&W standards but the darn guns go bang every time.

The hammerless M85 Taurus 38 snub I have is as simple as can be. The Charter should be no different. The right holster, and finding the sweet spot with the sights should make it a good pistol. +P's are pretty beefy on recoil, but I doubt it would matter in an SD scenario.  I did change the factory grips out for slightly longer Hogue's.

If the grips work for you, that's great;, if not, there are many different ones out there.

Let us know how it works out, congratulations. Gotta love a nice snub.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Good choice IMO, I have never had or heard of a problem with Charter revolvers.

Well, recieved the gun friday and went to qualify with it this morning. After 35 rounds of remington yellow box I put it away. The guy shooting next to me and I both were being hit with what I can only guess is lead. Not on every round but at least twice out of every 5 shot string. Not sure if the cylinder gap is to large or not. When I copared it to another revolver it does look slightly larger. The remingtons were the only 38 ammo any of us had so I didn't get a chance to try any jacketed rounds( the remingtons were lead). I will contact the shop that sold it to me on monday, any thought that you guys might have would be appriciated. Would hate to take it back and they tell me it's ok.

Check the cylinder timing with a flashlight and AN UNLOADED CYLINDER.  REPEAT.....AN UNLOADED CYLINDER...

Press the trigger all the way back to lock up and hold it there.  Check each barrel/cylinder alignment position while holding the flashlight perpendicular to the rear of the cylinder near the release button and looking down the barrel from the muzzle.  Repeat until you've checked all five or six depending on the cylinder type.

You should not see anything other than perfect alignment when the cylinder is in full lock up.  Even a small offset will be enough to make a difference.
