Need help
« on: February 16, 2008, 04:13:43 PM »
I have just recently sent off for my CCW permit.  I've been around guns my entire life.  Growing up in the middle of orange groves in central Florida, all we had to do on the weekends were to get together and shoot.  That is probably why I can't half hear today.

What I'm interested in is your opinion on a carry gun for motocycle riding.  My wife and I have started riding again, and I would like to carry something just in case.  We went down to the gun expo in Ft. Myers today and I got a few ideas, but would like to hear from you since you're not trying to sell me something.  What I kept going back to was the Taurus Millennium Pro 145.  It seemed to fit my hand better than most, and still seemed narrow enough to carry.  Also does anyone ride who carries and if so, what kind of holster do you use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jerry,
I rode years ago but I got scared and quit. I also live in NJ and can't carry, but I'm just thinking out loud here. You say the Millennium feels good and that's not the skinniest of guns, so probably you don't have to worry about "narrow".
Most riding clothes are pretty tight-fitting, so probably belt or IWB is out. Maybe the small of your back. If you're not totally zipped up maybe shoulder carry, but again, as tight as the clothes are, that might be a problem.
The only other thing I can think of is ankle carry. Positioned on the bike it's easily accessible, but not so much once your off the bike.

I can't imagine there aren't a lot of carryin' bikers out there, and I'm sure you will get some good advice. You might try re-titling your post to include biker carry or something- might get more responses.

I've ridden a lot in younger years, and I have carried, but never together.  As I have thought about your question and what might work two options come to mind:  1.  Shoulder holster & 2.  Ankle holster or IWB in boot top if you can get your pants leg up easily.  I thought the IWB in the boot top was a great idea, but the only way I could access it was when I wore shorts, and our daughter actually called me a dork when I put my cowboy boots on with some shorts to see how it would work ... Oh Well.

Jerry, when I rode I would carry my 1911 in an inside waistband holster. This allowed the gun to be hidden & protected from the elements. I wore a leather vest over it and kept one button fastened to make sure it didn't fly up and show the gun (not good in some states) but still allowed quick access. I would advise against small of the back carry because if you ever have to lay the bike down you could injure your spine. Get a good IWB that retains it's shape for ease of reholstering. Hope this helps.

I agree with Majer about small of back, When I used to ride I tryed that but my jacket would pull up the back of my shirt exposing the pistol, and that was with a 9mm tokarev, about as skinny a pistol as i've ever handled. Finally I settled on IWB in frontcross draw style, That seemed to work best for me.
