Conn. gunshot victim eats before going to hospital
« on: November 12, 2010, 08:51:19 PM »
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Police say a 25-year-old Connecticut man who was shot twice after buying a sandwich at a New Haven deli went home and ate his lunch before going to the hospital. Miguel Soto said he was leaving the deli Tuesday when he heard three gunshots. One bullet hit him in the left leg, another in the groin. Police said he went home and ate the sandwich before asking his father to take him to a hospital.

Police did not say whether Soto realized immediately that he had been shot, or if he decided the injuries were not serious enough to require an immediate hospital trip.

Officers say his injuries were not life-threatening. A message was left Thursday for a New Haven police spokesman, and no arrests were immediately reported.

I guess this guy prioritizes in a different manner than me, but a gunshot wound to my groin area is automatically SERIOUS.  I don't care how bad the hospital food is.

I used to quail hunt in South Texas. I was fortunate enough to own the kind of bird dog you get once in a lifetime (if you're damn lucky). He was hard core, he loved his job, and didn't care about pain. Every bush had a thorn, from sand spurs to prickly pear. He just kept going. I used to carry forceps with me, and I'd whistle him in every half hour to give him water and pull the thorns. Once, I pulled a few 2" long cactus spines from his wedding tackle. Shadrach didn't even slow down. He just wanted water, a pat, and a milk bone. Me? If I had thorns in my nuts, all forward progress would cease until the problem was adressed. I guess that's why I return to my question about the Marine recruiter. Because just like that dog, Home Boy is a hell of a lot tougher than I'll ever be. ;D

I understand the gentleman's dilemma.  Sometimes you have to think past stage 1 (though with a groin injury that pretty much trumps anything else), and think about other priorities.  In his case it was probably a strong dislike of hospital food.  Personally, I think hospitals are full of sick people and I try to avoid them if possible.

NOW, I wasn't shot in the groin, but,  I had a rather nasty industrial accident which needed emergency room treatment.   So, of course, I drove myself home, showered, put on clean underwear, then drove myself to the hospital.   Once they got me on a cart, I went into shock.

POINT:

There was no way, at 18, I was going to the ER, where all those very cute nurses were, with dirty underwear and not looking and smelling my best.   PRIORITIES.

And yes, I left there with 2 phone numbers, both of whom help ease my pain and suffering over the next couple of months.

The most important element in this story appears to be missing.
What type of sandwich was it?
Cold cuts could certainly wait.  But, if it was a pastrami, or a hot Italian meatball, or (heaven forfend) a grilled cheese...  Well, those just aren't any good when they're cold.

Sounds like a larger caliber was in order. Eating would not have been his priority if one had been used. Trying to stop the bleeding, and hoping someone called 911... would have. ::)

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
