This is question number 2 for me today ( 9mm help ).I have had the pleasure to shoot with our local CAS members, just love it the sound of the metal pinging at every shoot, the weapons, clothes etc. How the heck can you get around some of the startup cost? 2 pistols, holster, long guns etc. If its in 45 colt God help you on the cost to shoot. Even when I reload.The only firearm that seems reasonable is the shotgun. It was nice borrow the firearms and ammo but I had a squib in the rifle I was using and I didn't even catch it Thank God someone else was paying attention and grabbed the rifle from me before I tried force that next round in. My point to that is If I break it I will fix. Better fix my own than to fix someone elses. By my estimation, my startup cost is some where in the $3000-$4000 range maybe even more when the actions are worked on. And let face it once you own any firearm that has an action job you get spoiled. I love everything about Cowboy, Cowgirl Action but are there any corners ( $ ) I can cut and still have fun and be competitived???

Howdy Wisconsin, as far as cost cutting in CAS You can go to your local Good Will and find clothes that will look "Old West" for very little money. Some CAS clubs have a "Cowboy" Thrift sale once in a while where you can find good used guns, leather and clothing. Lots of people change their gun (upgrade or different category) or gain/;oose weight and need to but new outfits. Also, you have the SASS Wire classifieds, Lots of good deals there to check out as well as most of the Gun related sites.

Best advise I can give you is buy your guns from Rezac's Gun shop in Valapariso, Nebraska, they are one of the biggest CAS gunshops in the country  (I took a co-worker up there, he's bought a couple of guns from them, this week he go a new Springfield XD, and saved over a hundred dollars from not buying it at the big sporting good store, 25 miles away).  If you interested PM me and I'll give you the contact info.  45's are cool, but 38's are a heck of alot cheaper to shoot.  1892 clones are alright, but most have problems, a good starting rifle is a Marlin or a 66 or 73 clone.  Rugers are good pistols, but you can get the clones cheaper and they work well.  Shotguns, you can get a Baikal side by side, now imported by Remington for around 250 dollars.  The worst thing most folks do when they start shooting CAS is trying to go buy on the cheap end of things, especially on leather, don't do it, you will have a drawer full of stuff that way you don't use.  If you want commercial stuff Kirkpatrick Leather is hard to beat, if you want a little more authentic gear, Classic Old West Styles leather will run you around 50 dollars a holster for slim jims.  Several vendors carry them.  As far as clothes, you can get a decent pair of pants, or modify a old pair of blue jeans, any banded collar shirt will do, you can pick them up at many thrift stores.   Get a pair of Roper boots, either pull on's on lace up's.  Lastly spend the money on a good hat, when it rains, you will appreciate it.  The palm leaf hats by Sunbody.com are great if your only going to shoot in the summer.  You can get them for around 20 dollars.

My advice...you get what ya pay for...and since life is short, and ya can't take it with ya....buy what ya like and enjoy it while ya can.

Very true. However on my working mans wage. I have to plan out my every move. The cost too shoot is increasing as I type these words. But I sure love the sound You can't get that from paper.

Well here I go.  Got the pistols today. Now I need a rifel.  Any good one out there? 

My wife is going to have fun with this.  Took her to a shoot last year and she fell in love with this stuff after one of the guys set her up and let her shoot a stag.  Now I have to put this all together so she can shoot.

Is there any thing I should know about.

The Puma / Rossi 92 is a pretty good deal (http://www.legacysports.com/) and this guy is a specialist at slicking them up for SASS shooting http://www.stevesgunz.com/  He also sells them "race ready".

+1 on a 92 from Steve's Guns, His work is fantastic.  He will smooth the rifle up so it will work with little effort, if you send him a gun write the Serial # down because you won't believe it's the same rifle.

Now I need a shot gun.  Any suggestions.  Pump , side by side, signal shot??  12 or 20 ga.

Only one month till tha first shoot of the year .  The club's round up is on Sunday.

Going after those big, dangerous, African steel plates? 

My thoughts on shotgun.  I do not shoot SASS so take my opinion for what it is worth.

I think that the less moving parts the better on a gun that will see LOTS of use so I would go with SxS.  Less to break, less to adjust.
