The Best Defense and BoyScout Emergency Prep Merit Badge
« on: November 22, 2010, 12:53:37 PM »
#1 son was working on his Emergency Prep meritbadge and we were having a devil of a time getting him to THINK about what might go into a 72 hour kit for the family.  It happened that the show you had about your bug out kits was on - sat him down to watch it and the light clicked on.

After that he went a bit nutz with the google-fu and we now have a box with some absolute essentials - and two more laminates lists of quick to grab then if we have time to grab stuff.

Excellent!!!!!   ;D

That is a nice win. It would be interesting to know what he thought were essentials, though . . . .    ;)

Now there is a practical merit badge that they have added over the last 36 years!

It would be great to see his work on this.  Could you find a way to share info and photos with us?

Thanks also for posting this, because it is great for the M's and Outdoor Channel to see what influence this programing has on everyday life.

Congrats to the Scout!

first off I put this in the wrong forum!

off top of my head

72 hour gear - fits in a big tote thing

cheap multi tool
cheap 'buck knife'
duct tape
paracute cord
2 5 gal collapasble water containers
10x12 heavy duty tarp
2 led flash lights
1 battery radio
1 package of AA Lithium Batteries
1 road atlas
1 roll TP
1 box 1 gal freezer bags
1 jar peanut butter
2 boxes granola bars
2 boxes crackers
6 ready to eat rice pouches
6 pouches tuna
1 small bottle olive oil
3 cans dog food
6 cans cat food
1 bottle Hydrogen peroxide
first aid kit
2 wool blankets
leashes

second level stuff

single burner backpack stove
nested cook pots
4 sporks
big tent 4 man with vesibule
hatchet
roll of 50 gal heavy trash bags
sleep bags
pet crates
fill  big black and yellow tote with food from pantry (coco,  oatmeal, rice meals, can soup , can tuna and ham)

the whole family camps so there is usually various camp 'stuff' in packs anyways so we'd grab those as well

third level stuff (taking a second vehicle)

rest of our camping gear, extra tent
4 big 8 gal gas cans
cheap GMRS radios
rest of the pantry - pancake mix, regular rice,

truth be told we live in the sticks so it's a lot more likely we'll bug in or even having some folks come
'fort up' with us.

I'll post up the pic in a day or so

Thanks WTR!

How about a little history on your Scout and his trek.  Always good and uplifting to hear about the good ones.

One thing I added recently is one of the power inverters that plug into the truck lighter socket. That way you have a way to charge cell phones, etc. Low power items on the go. Small and great also for camping
