The only thing a kitchen gadget would do for my wife is to collect dust.  she hates to cook, which is ok with me as she is not good at it.  I am, and I enjoy it.   I have to sour dow culture fermenting right now.  I don't know how a book would go over, she has to read so much for work I bet she is sick of it.

I cheated... when I went to SFO to pick up the inlaws, I swung by the warf and got some starter.

Feed your starter and take care of it and it'll live longer than you. It probably did already.

I know how to take care of a mother, I just have no desire too.  I don't bake enough for that to be worth while.

My Dad used a starter once, but after that he started his own. This was years ago but as I remember it was pretty easy.
For years we never ate store bought bread in the winter. (To hot to bake in the wood cook stove in the summer.)

Its not hard at all, I just have better things to do, and I have to find a good place to keep.  which is easy in the winter, but when its 110+ in the summer its hard to find a place cool enough to keep it going.

I kept a started going for years.. then finally used it all up.
I still make my bread but just use bread flour and regular stuff.
