?'s about Winchester model 1895 30-06

I have a 1895 in 30-06 that used to be my grandfathers rifle.  From a serial # search I think it was made in 1921.
The barrel measures about 24'' to the rear of chamber, and the handguard has the sporter style with plastic insert.
Strange thing is that the rear sight is not present, but it has a insert that fills the notch where it would mount.
It was his deer rifle for years and it looks as if he drilled and tapped the reciever for a scope mount.  Also has been drilled and tapped on the rear tang where the stock attached, I think to mount some kind of peep sight that is no longer around.  Front sight is also gone.
A couple of the screws are a tad buggered up, and the one that secures the stock from the top looks to be the wrong one with a brass washer that shouldn't be there.
The wood looks darker than most pics I have found of this rifle, may have been refinished?  Blueing on the reciever and lever action ain't so great
I will try to include some pics, but am internet challanged.

What can you guys tell me about the gun?  How much is a well used and modified gun of this type worth?  Any info would be awsome.

It won't be worth much. Those holes in the tang and in the left side of the receiver easily cost you a couple hundred bucks each. The wood looks to be pretty typical of a rifle of that vintage. Remember that it was very common to "freshen up" stocks by rubbing them with boiled linseed oil every so often. That can account for some of the darkening. The rear sight blank wouldn't be a big deal as long as the factory slot wasn't enlarged to make the blank fit. In all honesty, if you got $500 for it I'd be surprised.

I don't think I will shoot this gun, if I keep it it will be for sentimental and aesthetic reasons.  From what I understand my grandfather used it to take truckloads of deer to feed my family over many many years.  Also it just looks really cool. 

I am not usually taken with these kind of sentiments, but may have to make an exception for this rifle.  Seems somehow wrong to trade it for a plastic pistol or something.

It looks in good enough shape, even have a local smith give it a once over, if there's a doubt to its shootability.. I goto ALOT of gun shows, these old rifles, are getting more valuable. Look at M1's, pre 64 Winchesters, Browning BLR's, these old rifles, taken care of, and handed down, are increasing in value, because they are designed to last. If nothing else, find out all the info you can, document it, even shoot it from time to time.

I'll bet it still works fine. Keep it in the family. Oil it, and it will last another 100 years. It's a great rifle. Brownell's or Numerich, probably has sights for it.

And it does look really cool. Great caliber to boot.

nice lookin' piece. don't think I would worry about worth if it's Granddad's. I have my grandfathers old Winchester model 12 shotgun and don't care what it's worth as I'll never sell or trade it. enjoy it..
