Regulations on pastures, grazing animals, livestock, produce, organic markets, food recalls, , Big Brother has gotten bigger.

The current FDA chair, is a former exec at a US Conglomerate called Monsanto. They really want this bill, and they got it. Guess who is the 2nd largest shareholder in Monsanto,......wait for it,.....

Republicans voted for it also. The increased regulatory powers have just been exponentially increased... As with most gov't. It's not a good thing.

I will take this opportunity to say "I told you so". (just kidding) Its not about party, its about money and power. What Monsanto and other large agribusiness firms want, they get in terms of farm state votes. GOP or Dem, it doesn't much matter. If you think that 2010 was in any way a repudiation of business as usual, explain this. The GOP kept McConnel and Boehner, the guys who got voted out of power in 2006 as their leaders. The Dems kept Reid and Pelosi, who got voted out in in 2010. What does this say about either party's opnion of the American voter?

Start buying food folks, start canning, just like Grandmother used to, at best, only food prices go up.

Our FFA organization opens and runs the county canning plant each summer. It is usually very busy each year. They are building a new one (looks like just in time) to open at the beginning of the canning season next year.
I calculate it that it will be overflowing with business next year.

You can't beat the price. You do the work up to the point of the cans going into the steam bath and then they do the rest.....all for around 55 cents per quart can. We do tomatoes, peas, and green beans, and even blueberries. This past year we opted to put the green beans in Mason jars and canned them at home since we already had the jars.....the new canning plant will also be set up to do jars as well as cans, so if you have your own jars the cost per quart will be very minimal.

It's simple TW. Commercially produced Grains and Vegetables such as Monsanto and ADM produce, in those "Agri - States", The stuff we sell to Russia and other countries, do not reproduce. You want another crop ? You have to buy more of their seed, you can't just save the seeds from what you grew this year.

House May Block Food Safety Bill Over Senate Error

A food safety bill that has burned up precious days of the Senate’s lame-duck session appears headed back to the chamber because Democrats violated a constitutional provision requiring that tax provisions originate in the House.

By pre-empting the House’s tax-writing authority, Senate Democrats appear to have touched off a power struggle with members of their own party in the House. The Senate passed the bill Tuesday, sending it to the House, but House Democrats are expected to use a procedure known as “blue slipping” to block the bill, according to House and Senate GOP aides.

The debacle could prove to be a major embarrassment for Senate Democrats, who sought Tuesday to make the relatively unknown bill a major political issue by sending out numerous news releases trumpeting its passage.

Section 107 of the bill includes a set of fees that are classified as revenue raisers, which are technically taxes under the Constitution. According to a House GOP leadership aide, that section has ruffled the feathers of Ways and Means Committee Democrats, who are expected to use the blue slip process to block completion of the bill.

“We understand there is a blue slip problem, and we expect the House to assert its rights under the Constitution to be the place where revenue bills begin,” the GOP aide said.

The blue slip could lead to one of two likely outcomes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) could simply drop the issue and let the next session of Congress start from scratch, a strategy that would allow him time in the lame-duck session to tackle other last-minute priorities, such as the expiring 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, a long-term continuing resolution, an immigration bill and a repeal of the military’s ban on openly gay service members.

Or he could try to force the issue in the Senate after the House passes a new version of the bill. But in order to do that and still tackle the other issues, he would need a unanimous consent agreement to limit debate.
